California Democratic Convention

The California Democratic Convention was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center next to the Staples Center.  Several of the active members of DFA-OC were delegates this year, and our impact rocked the party all the way to Sacramento and Washington D.C.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean brought the house to its feet several times during his keynote address during the convention dinner.

He took aim at Governor Schwarzenegger for reneging on his budget deal with California teachers.

During the convention we also passed several resolutions that will help to shape the direction of our party including:

  • Funding and support for Democrats at the local level

  • Clean Money Campaigns for State and Legislative races

  • Support for Civil Marriage and Religious Freedom to end discrimination against gays

  • Increase in the Minimum Wage

  • Support for Social Security and opposition to state cuts in human services

  • Opposition to the Central America Free Trade Agreement

  • Support for California veterans to make up cuts in the Federal Veterans benefits

  • Reaffirmation of a Woman's Right to Choice and Privacy

  • Call to quickly end to the occupation of Iraq

For many delegates, this was their first convention.  It was one of the best I had seen since 2003 when again it was Howard Dean that invigorated the Democrats and started the "Dean Phenomenon."

For those who would like to become delegates to future conventions, the first step is to join your Assembly District Committee and become active with the nuts and bolts tasks in the party.
