Support the TroopsThe President’s budget proposal is a slap in the face to veterans. Once again our veterans are being asked to pony up for a pay as you go medical system. This is the way Republicans "Support the Troops." These veterans earned a right to be honored and cared for by a patriotic nation. We the tax-payers made a pact with these veterans that they would be taken care of in their time of need if they would fight for us in our time of peril. Those who would turn their backs on our veterans should be ashamed. Today we have dwindling enlistments and reduced retention. Could it be that "cost cutting" proposals such as this one send a clear message to our young people that their military service is neither respected nor will it be rewarded. That those who served their country were chumps, not heroes. Demand that Congress fully fund veterans benefits and expand access to include all of our needy veterans of past wars as well as those returning from this brutal war in Iraq. What I Didn't See in IraqBy Congressman Jim McGovern"Trust me when I tell you things are so much better in Iraq," said one US
military official to me on my recent visit to that war-ravaged country. I
didn't know whether to scream or pull the remaining two strands of hair
out of my head. I was in Iraq as part of a delegation of eight members of
Congress, led by House minority leader Nancy Pelosi. Everything we have
been told about Iraq by the Bush Administration has either been an
outright lie or overwhelmingly false. There were no weapons of mass
destruction; we have not been greeted as liberators; and the cost in terms
of blood and treasure has outpaced even their worst-case scenarios. Trust
is something I cannot give to this Administration.
