The most stigmatized people in Calcutta's red light district are not the prostitutes, but their children. In the face of abject poverty, abuse, and despair, these kids have little possibility of escaping their mother's fate or for creating another type of life. In Born into Brothels, directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman chronicle the amazing transformation of the children they come to know in the red light district. Mar 12 Wednesday 9am-3pm, Fullerton: 5 Years of War: A Reflection on the Human Cost We have a portion of the Quad reserved to set up a display of art, poems, posters, articles, and other sources of information to show the human cost of war. We want to provide a visible display to allow for a reflection of the human cost of war.
DO YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL ABOUT THE HUMAN COST OF WAR? Please feel free to put together a poster, pictures, art, etc. that tells a personal story of how the war has affected you, and/or someone you care about.
Since the United States has invaded Iraq some 1,000,000 Iraqi civilians have died, some 5,000,000 Iraqi civilians have had to leave their homes. There are thousands of dead, wounded and displaced civilians in Afghanistan. The death toll for American soldiers is over 3,000 with tens of thousands physically and emotionally wounded.
The Human Cost of war is experienced on the battlefield, in the homes of innocent civilians, and for years and years to come in the lives of individuals and in society as a whole. The ongoing human cost of war is reflected in the anguish, and loss that permeates peoples lives affected by the war, by the high suicide rates of returning soldiers (over 2,000 to date), in the post traumatic stress that is experienced by so many whose lives are shattered and twisted by war, in the homelessness of veterans and civilians displaced by war, and by a generation of Iraqi children whose future is unknown.
If you are interested in participating in this event please contact Karen Markley, Anthropology Department at kmarkley@fullcoll.edu. Fullerton College 321 East Chapman Avenue Fullerton, CA 92832

Will Iraq and health care recede, and the economy be front and center? Please remember to bring your food or money donations for Second Harvest. This is a bad time for many families in Orange County, and Second Harvest lost many volunteers when they moved to Irvine. Please help our member Linda with this most worthwhile project! Emmy Award-winning filmmaker David Earnhardt's recently released feature-length film chronicles this century's election process malfunctions and explores the many ways in which individual votes don't get counted, including intimidation of minority voters, voting machines which either do not work or cannot produce a paper trail for recounts, and the sudden inaccuracy of exit polls after a 40-year success record, among others.
Club members and residents are invited to view this vitally important film on the big screen. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call Club President Barbara Amster at 460-051 lw-dems.org

Mar 13 Thursday 7pm, Laguna Beach: Laguna Beach Democratic Club Join us in a Community Forum on "Urban Liberalism" with West Hollywood Mayor John Duran West Hollywood was the first city in southern California to oppose the war in Iraq, call for the impeachment of the president, to require a 20% set aside for low and moderate income housing in all new developments and has instituted some of the strongest rent control ordinances in California.
Mayor Duran has continued to take the lead on issues such as marriage equality, increasing city funding of the fine arts, and codifying the humane treatment of animals within the city limits. As an "aging rock n' roll lover," Mayor Duran continues to push for the historic preservation of the Sunset Strip. He has received numerous awards and accolades, including but not limited to being "one of the 20 most influential members of the gay community" by IN LA Magazine, "Friend of the Animals" by the U.S. Humane Society in 2003 and the L.A. Humanitarian Award for his dedication to human rights and AIDS activism.
With a common history of tolerance, historic and natural preservation, love of the arts, and an involved gay community, Laguna Beach and West Hollywood could well be "Sister" cities in many respects. Join us to see an outside perspective on how we can help make our village an even more livable and compassionate place.

On May 1, 2007 the House and the Senate passed two resolutions: House Resolution 100 submitted by Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis & Senate Resolution 178 submitted by Senator Jeff Bingaman. The Resolution condemns the murders and expresses condolences and support to families of victims. Specifically, the resolution encourages the Government of Guatemala to recognize domestic violence as a crime and to promptly investigate the killings and prosecute those responsible. It also encourages adequate resources for police and prosecutors to investigate the murders thoroughly and urges the U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala to meet with the families of the victims. Finally, it recommends that the Secretary of State develop a comprehensive plan to address and combat the growing problem of violence against women in Latin America. libertadlatina.org/Crisis_Indigenous_LatAm_Guatemala_Index.htm

Mar 26 Wednesday 5:30-7pm, Orange: Extra turnout needed at Orange Circle Wednesdays Some right-wing group continues to join the Code Pink Wednesday Vigils at the Orange Circle. (Every Wednesday 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the intersection of Glassell & Chapman in Orange) They are variously reported as coming from: - a biker club of an American Legion post - a bunch of Freepers - a chapter of the notoriously xenophobic Minutemen and "Save our State" Whoever they are, they are apparently believing some propaganda to the effect that Code Pink is "against the military", whatever that might mean to them. Fortunately, much of what they carry, such as U.S. flags and "Support the Troops" signs, is not much different from what one might see in any antiwar demo. So as long as enough peace-promoting folks show up, the public will probably think it looks like one big Code Pink demo.

We will be meeting on Saturday, March 29th, at 8am at the corner of Jeronimo and Orange and carpooling to Modjeska Canyon (like 9 miles from the corner) where we will start with a press conference to denounce all the abuses that have been going on at the corner, and the City's tactics to get rid of the day laborers. The press conference will be at Santiago Canyon Rd and Modjeska Canyon Rd on Modjeska Canyon Rd at 9am After that, we will be helping a really cool lady who is ready to send a very pro-immigrant, pro-day laborer message to the press. At 12pm they will provide us with lunch, and that will be it. They will also provide us with water throughout the day. We will be having day laborers from other corners helping during the clean up and sending their messages of support for their brothers from Lake Forest. Attached is the poster with the information. We might need a little bit of help transporting the day laborers from Lake Forest to Modjeska Canyon and back to their corner once we are done. Please, don't hesitate to email me o call me if you have any questions about the action. The workers are very motivated, and I know they will feel very happy to see you at their action. On Saturday, March 29, join millions of people around our big blue planet for Earth Hour. Together, we'll reduce greenhouse gases and make a major statement about global warming. Just turn off your lights for one hour starting at 8 p.m. local time. Earth Hour was born in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million residents and 2,100 businesses took a step to protect Earth's resources: they turned off the lights for one hour. This simple act reduced the city's energy consumption by 10 percent - the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour. Less electricity, less coal mined and burned, less global warming together!! There is power in numbers.
