Progressive Potluck 6:30 - 7:30 P.M. Bring along your favorite dish of food, chips, dips, or soft drinks, and spend an hour mingling with progressive people from all over Orange County.
Featured Speaker: 7:30 - 8:30 P.M. In 1996, Berty Segal Cook was invited by the Inuit of Barrow, Alaska to design a program that would train their teachers in strategies to develop, maintain, preserve, and revitalize their Native language. At that time their Native language was in danger of dying out. This began a series of trainings with 14 different tribes of First Nation People in Canada and indigenous peoples in the United States. Between 2007 and 2008, Berty worked with the Canadian Inuit. These teachers came from nine different islands along the Northern coast of Canada. In this presentation, Berty will show a slide presentation describing this recent experience working with the Inuit of Northern Canada. The goal again was to train them to preserve their Native languages. She will share what she learned about the culture and values of these highly intelligent, advanced peoples. Berty, is rated one of the top ESL/Foreign language teacher trainers in the nation. She has trained teachers across the United States and in 20 other countries. She has worked with 15 different bands (tribes) of indigenous peoples across Canada, Guam, and the U.S. Her book, "Teaching English Through Action," has been translated into a number of languages, including 12 native languages.
Open Forum 8:30 - 9:15 P.M. Open discussion, announcements, and other news of interest.
The "Potluck for Progressives" is endorsed by the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim and is free and open to the general public. Although a small donation might be requested to help pay for facility costs, nobody will be turned away due to a lack of funds.

Both Norby and Ackerman spent over $200,000 EACH! John did amazingly well with a walking and phoning campaign. Thank you to all the volunteers who made it possible. Imagine what the outcome would have been with some $$ for mailing!

Dec 6 (1st Sunday) 8am-5pm, Huntington Beach: Arlington West Memorial This coming weekend, on Sunday December 6th, we hope to have our December 2009 installation of the Arlington West Memorial in Huntington Beach. Presently the weather is expected to be overcast with a high of 61 and a 20% chance of rain. We have weathered the weather before, and will probably setup regardless, but will keep an eye on it and try to notify everyone if plans change.
The Occupation of Iraq continues. We are seeing record casualties in Afghanistan. And have had another force escalation announced for Afghanistan inspite of warnings against it from broad swathes of knowledgeable sources and parties. As Afghanistan builds up faster than forces are removed from Iraq, we have more troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined than ever before.
We! need to remind the public of the continuing conflicts and sacrifices, as well as being there for service members and families in need of help.
Weather forecast: The present forecast is for a high of 61 under probably overcast skies.
We remain as dedicated as ever to doing what we can to keep the costs of these conflicts in front of the public, to continue this display, forum and venue, and to promote the cause of peace, while honoring those that serve and particularly those that have been sacrificed. We do this while also fighting for full and proper benefits and care for our returning and past veterans. We cannot let the public forget that many of our nation's sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and even fathers and mothers, are still daily struggling and risking life half a world away.
Please consider helping, or at least visiting, as we again setup our memorial on the sands of Huntington Beach to! give thanks to and to honor those who have served our country and par ticularly those that made the ultimate sacrifice. We must continue to remind the public of this ongoing conflicts and their costs to our nation and its families, and also to continue to talk to, support and help the many Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Veterans, family members and concerned others that come by.
Volunteers are needed and guests are always very much welcome. As usual we will be at 6th Street (north of pier and of Main Street) Huntington Beach on the beach. Display should be up from 8 to about 4PM. Please come visit and, if you can, PLEASE come to help with setup and/or breakdown. In addition to the moving display and great people and the beach itself, we will have a good selection of peace supplies for small (or better large :-) donations. We often have many great people visiting and great conversations going on.
I need to know that we have enough veteran members willing to staff it all day and enough help and transport to get it s! etup and taken down. If you can help, please respond to this email (arncomp@pacbell. net) as soon as you can confirm your plans for Sunday.
It is important that we hear from veteran members soon to know what coverage we will have for the day. Please let us know what hours you can expect to be present.
Volunteers: Please remember to change your clocks Saturday night. We usually need the most help and transport in the morning, though both morning and evening are critical. We meetup at the storage unit, Mini-U-Stor, at 7611 Talbert Ave. HB (that's n/west of Beach Blvd. between Beach and Gothard) at 7AM. We can use some additional transport help and lots of helping hands. We get to the beach around/after 7:30 and start the setup of the field of crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 40 minutes or over two hours. Take down goes much quicker than setup (at least for the beach portion). ! ; With a 5PM sunset, we will be on winter schedule with breakdown star ting about 4PM and hopefully have everything back in the storage unit by 5:00. Evening transport help going back to storage is also an area of need.

Brief campaign update: We are now in round 2 of the Special Election in the 72nd Assembly District. The Special General Election will be on January 12th. In spite of spending very little money and sending no mailers during the Primary, John (actual votes,10,779) got 3,000 more votes than Linda Ackerman (7,826 votes) and only 4,000 less votes than Chris Norby (14,946 votes). Both Norby and Ackerman spent over $200,000 EACH! John did amazingly well with a walking and phoning campaign. Thank you to all the volunteers who made it possible. Imagine what the outcome would have been with some $$ for mailing!
30,746 ballots were mailed in and only 9,453 people voted at polling places on November 17th. THIS SEAT CAN BE WON IF WE TURN OUT MORE DEMOCRATS TO VOTE BY MAIL ON JANUARY 12th!

We start at 6:30PM with a training so you'll be prepared to get on the phones and talk to voters. We use a script and there will be coaches to help you if you need it. If you have never done a phone bank, this is a pretty easy ask and it will be fun and rewarding. We call only targeted constituents. Dec 21 Monday 4pm, Garden Grove: "Health Care-oling" Action office of Loretta Sanchez, 12397 Lewis St. #101 Garden Grove, CA 92840
We will be caroling outside of L. Sanchez' office and speaking with her aide to make a strong push for an improved health care bill. As you know, right now the Senate health care bill is almost a disaster, but don't give up: Once the bill passes the Senate, it is expected to go to a conference committee, where the House bill (which included a public option) and the Senate bill will be combined. The final bill that comes out of conference could be stronger than the current Senate bill and could still result in real health care reform including the choice of a public health insurance option. Families facing bankruptcy with skyrocketing health care costs need us to fight for them AND for us! Loretta has been targeted as a Rep. who supports a public option and we are there to make sure she knows we are expecting her to fight for that, if that's what it takes. We are here in support of that stance. If you don't sing well, please come! We'll make even more of an impact! And if you do sing well, of course you must come and get those non-singers off the ground! I'm hoping we'll have some carols with changed health care words. If you'd like to come up with one, go ahead. I think MoveOn will have a choice or two by then, but so far they don't. Let's get some oomph and get on over to Loretta's, easy-to-park, office for a half hour or so. See you there. sign up below: pol.moveon.org/event/events/event.html?event_id=100265

Dec 21 Monday 7pm, Long Beach: Radical Cinema Presents: Ballot Measure 9 A film by Heather MacDonald This movie documents the campaign to stop Measure 9 from being passed. Sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance, it would have cancelled gay rights laws in Oregon and prevented similar laws from being passed. OCA's campaign unleashed a storm of hate in the state of Oregon. This film shows the courage of gay activists who weathered the storm and held their ground.

Dec 22 Tuesday 7pm, Santa Ana: This month, the Patrick Henry Democratic Club is having our Christmas Party with special guest, Nativo Lopez of Hermandad Mexicana and MAPA. We will announce our Annual Awards, hold a Secret Santa gift exchange (bring your own wrapped gift of up to $10 value to get one), with a possible surprise, local celebrity guest as well.
More information on this issue: We will be having two more guest speakers at our meeting next week: Ralph Sanders, Program Manager for American Family Housing, and Pastor Gary Chomiak, Fullerton Congregational Church, both of whom are also doing work to help feed the homeless. So put all of your resources together for the homeless and bring some food or other donations to the meeting, or take them to Tripp's (see Art's message, below) to help them out since their building was destroyed. If you haven't voted for Congresswoman of the Year, please do so - we have a heated race between Waters and Lee, and I sent out some info on my opinion earlier today (you need not respond to that, but do vote).

Jan 8 Friday 6:30-9:15pm, Anaheim: Potluck for Progressives: "The Tax, Regulate, & Control Cannabis Act of 2010" Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim, 511 South Harbor Blvd., Anaheim, California (Located on the Southwest corner of Harbor Blvd. and Santa Ana Street) (714) 758-1050 uuchurchoc.org
The "Potluck for Progressives" is a group organized for the purpose of bringing together likeminded people on a weekly basis to break bread and talk about crucial issues affecting the community and the world.
At each meeting, people interested in peace, social justice, labor, and the environment gather to exchange ideas, talk about successes, plan actions, or just engage in a friendly discussion with one another.
Bring a dish to share! Enjoy the bounty that others bring as well! The potluck will start at 6:30 p.m. with a speaker or film to follow at 7:30 p.m. Please join us even if you can't bring any food!
On the Agenda:
Progressive Potluck 6:30 - 7:30 P.M. Bring along your favorite dish of food, chips, dips, or soft drinks, and spend an hour mingling with progressive people from all over Orange County.
Tim Castleman, an environmentalist and advocate for the legalization or marijuana, will deliver a presentation on "The Tax, Regulate, and Control Cannabis Act of 2010," an initiative still in the signature gathering phase, which, if it makes it to the ballot next November, will give California voters a chance to "repeal state laws that make it a crime for people 21 years old or older to use, possess, sell, cultivate, or transport marijuana or industrial hemp." According to the California State Legislative Analysts Office, passage of this initiative "could result in a major reduction in state and local costs for enforcement of marijuana-related offenses and the handling of related criminal cases in the court system" and bring "significant savings to state and local governments, potentially in the several tens of millions of dollars annually, by reducing the number of marijuana offenders incarcerated in state prisons and county jails." Come to Castleman's presentation to find out more about the many positive benefits "The Tax, Regulate, and Control Cannabis Act of 2010" would have upon millions of Californians and learn what you personally can do to help ensure this initiative ends up on the ballot in the November 2010 election.

Jan 9/10 Saturday/Sunday, Fullerton: Region 6 Invasion of AD 72 Young Democrats!
As you know, Assembly Member Mike Duvall had to leave the Assembly in disgrace earlier this year. Now, uber crazy Republican and general anti-worker candidate Chris Norby is running to replace "Spanky" Duvall.
Democrat John MacMurray is running on the Democratic side, and we want to do our part to mobilize Young Democrats to get to the polls. On January 9 and 10 the Orange County Young Democrats will be hosting a Regional Invasion to Get Out the Vote!
AD 72 contains the Fullerton area, which houses the most populace Cal State school in the entire system (Cal State Fullerton), and has some of the most dense youth precincts in all of California. We are calling on all YD's to come join us for some good old fashioned Peer to Peer outreach to elect a Democrat to the State Assembly! How much help to our new Speaker John A. Perez would another Democrat be in solving the problems facing this state and our generation? How easy would it be for you to come to the OC and help mobilize your peers?
Please let your members know about this unique chance to turn Orange County blue and commit yourself to a few hours on the weekend of January 9-10.
Time: TBD, but we are Young Democrats so we ARE NOT STARTING BEFORE 10AM!!!!! RSVP: Tim Steed - tsteed@oceamember.org or 949-735-2353

Jan 16 Saturday 9:30-10:30am, Long Beach: Martin Luther King Jr. Parade This is a really big event in Long Beach, and MFSO, LBAPN, Veterans for Peace and other groups will be marching together. Please do your best to join us so that the city of Long Beach will hear our important message and see that the time to end this war is now. Many are hoping we make a big show, and are happy we are coming. We are hoping that Iraq Veterans Against the War will be able to come from LA and march with our group.
We need to be in place by 9:30AM, but the actual parade starts at 10:30 AM. Last year, parking was available at Long Beach City College-Pacific Coast Campus located at 1305 East Pacific Coast Hwy. Use the shuttle to Martin Luther King Ave and 7th Street. The parade ends near the college. If you cannot find us, go to "Parade Participant Check-in" and ask for the MFSO location. Please only signs in good taste. Our message is, "Funding the war is killing our troops". Dr. King was for peace, and very outspoken about ending the war in Vietnam, so we are making this connection with our signs at the parade. We will also be hauling our 8 ft. soldier, Oscar. We will have messages from King's speeches, and will be tabling or flyering after the parade, so please come by. If you would like to help, call Pat at 562-833-8035, but we need you most at the parade to help carry the banners we are bringing. We will be decorating the truck at the parade this year so come early and help decorate. Pat will figure out how to make a party out of that part. Our current plan is to have the truck in place by 8:30AM., so mark your calendars for Saturday, January 16th. See you there!

new Feb 2 Tuesday 10am, Costa Mesa: Fair Board to Discuss Stopping Sale The Fair Board will have a special meeting to discuss a resolution asking the Governor to stop the sale. The resolution was brought up at the January 21 meeting. David Padilla supported the resolution but was pushed back by Kristina Dodge and Dave Ellis. Dodge wanted to send the resolution to a committee to meet with Costa Mesa City Councilmember Katrina Foley, who proposed the resolution. The committee would then report back to the Fair Board, who would then decide if the Board wanted to consider the item at a later meeting. Dodge's strategy would have effectively prevented the Fair Board from considering the resolution before the winning final bidder was announced.

Feb 5 (1st Friday) 6:30-9pm, Orange: Friday Night Film Series: Children of the Amazon Documentary follows Brazilian filmmaker Denise Zmekhol as she travels a modern highway deep into the Amazon in search of the Indigenous Surui and Negarote children she photographed fifteen years ago. For countless generations, the Amazon rainforest provided a home to the Surui and Negarote people who lived in what they called "forest time?" - utterly beyond the realm of contemporary human life. Their only contact with the "outside" world was through rubber tappers. Today, footpaths gave way to a road and then a highway cutting through 2000 miles of forest. Lush forest has now been clear-cut and burned, deadly diseases have killed thousands of Indians, and "forest time" has suffered an irreversible transformation. newsreel.org/nav/title.asp?tc=CN0217

You are invited to an unusual event happening in Anaheim this month! The Sierra Club is forming a coalition of interested groups and individuals who will come together to assist the City of Anaheim in reducing it's coal contracts and transferring it's energy needs onto renewable energy. The Friday night Potluck For Progressives held regularly at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Anaheim is hosting the kickoff for this project. Please join us for a unique opportunity to learn about the issue and see where you can fit into the process. (From bringing some food to share Friday night-to signing up to help educate the public about Anaheim's Dirty Secret - that we get 68% of our energy from dirty, polluting coal.) We can reduce our personal energy consumption by a huge percent, and it still doesn't hold a candle to halting the creation of carbon emissions at the source - the coal-powered electric plant. Wouldn't it be nice to use hot water and air conditioning freely without guilt? Come help us to work toward that goal in Anaheim. As a member of a city with a municipally-owned utility you have a direct say in the way the city invests. You are the shareholder.

Volunteers man an RV, located across from the Intake & Release Center of the Santa Ana Jail. Volunteers are able to offer coffee, water, snacks, clothing, & the use of their cell phone, all provided free of charge. The RV also supplies free printed resources providing a comprehensive list of shelters, sober living homes, job programs, legal aid services & more to help them towards self-sufficiency. Oftentimes, once they are released from custody, they have no money for phone calls or bus fare. This program offers an immediate presence, a sort of safe haven for those men & women who often feel disoriented during the critical post-release period. ADDITIONAL NOTICES

1. We Wish You a Merry Christmas
(a simple one to get warmed up)

We wish you a merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Our troops deserve a merry Christmas,
Our troops deserve a merry Christmas,
Our troops deserve a merry Christmas, so bring them back here!

Yes, stopping this war is something Congress can do:
So, [DANA], stop the funding, or the death toll's on you!

We won't stop until they're back home
We won't stop until they're back home
We won't stop until they're back home so bring them back here!

Yes, stopping this war is something Congress can do:
So, [DANA], stop the funding, or the death toll's on you!

Our troops deserve a merry Christmas,
Our troops deserve a merry Christmas,

Our troops deserve a merry Christmas, so
BRING THEM BACK NOW!!!

2. Why the Hell Are We Here?
(tune of Do You Hear What I Hear, Nelson-Alviso 2006)

Said the grunt to his sergeant in Iraq:
Why the hell are we here? (Why the hell are we here?)
Tryin' to not get shot in the back,
Why the hell are we here? (Why the hell are we here?)
A wife and child wait for me back home,
spending Christmas-time all alone,
spending Christmas-time all alone.

Said the sarge to the Captain in command:
Why the hell are we here? (Why the hell are we here?)
Ev'ry week it seems I lose a man.
Why the hell are we here? (Why the hell are we here?)
A roadside bomb planted in the night
filling ev'ry moment with fright;
There's no way to win such a fight.

Said the Captain to the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
Why the hell are we here? (Why the hell are we here?)
In this civil war in Iraq?
Why the hell are we here? (Why the hell are we here?)
Each bomb we drop only makes things worse;
and our choosing sides is perverse
in this Sunni/Shia universe.

Said the troops to the Congressman back home
Time to bring us back now! (Time to bring us back now!)
Congressman all comfy back home,
Time to bring us back now! (Time to bring us back now!)
This war, this war, has gone on far too long,
Can you hear the words of our song?
Getting out will make us- more strong!!!

3. The Exit-Plan Rock
(tune of Jingle-Bell Rock, Nelson 2007)

Bring 'em back bring 'em back bring 'em back home,
Pack 'em in trucks and shlepp 'em in jeeps,
Squeeze 'em in humvees, a dozen to one,
Now your Exit Plan has begun!
Bring 'em back bring 'em back bring 'em back home,
Here a battalion, there a platoon,
Fly home that jet plane as full as you dare,
thru the frosty air!

It's the right time, yes it's high time,
to end this dumbass war!
Turn our Bradleys into ploughshares:
We ain't gonna study war no more!
Bring 'em back bring 'em back bring 'em back home,
Ship 'em home 'round the clock;
With all dispatch snatch 'em out of Iraq,
That's your Exit Plan, that's our Exit Plan,
that's the Exit Plan Rock!

4. brand-new! - Obama We're Hopeful
(Nelson 2008, tune of "O Come All Ye Faithful")

Obama we're hopeful, cautiously believing
you meant when you told us that you'd end this war,
Sooner than later, let's get our troops back state-side!
OBAMA WE'LL BE WATCHING,
OBAMA WE'LL BE MARCHING,
OBAMA WE'LL BE HOLDING YOUR FEET TO THE FIRE!

Ensconced in the White House, trying to get your bearings,
Oil men and gen'rals whisp'ring in those big ears,
Filling your head with doubts and grim scenarios,
OBAMA WE'LL BE WATCHING,
OBAMA WE'LL BE MARCHING,
OBAMA WE'LL BE HOLDING YOUR FEET TO THE FIRE!

Barack, you were right on this war from the beginning;
You beat the Republican and Democra-t hawks.
Now you're elected to end this occupa-tion!
OBAMA WE'LL BE WATCHING,
OBAMA WE'LL BE MARCHING,
OBAMA WE'LL BE HOLDING YOUR FEET TO THE FIRE!

5. to the tune of Winter Wonderland
(Quinlan-Alviso, 2008)

Hey [Ed Royce], are you list'ning?
In Iraq, blood is glist'ning?
A horrible sight, we're frightened tonight, walking in Iraqi war-torn land.

In the winter we are building bases, and pretending that we're leaving town.
They'll say are you stayin', we'll say "No man,
But you can clean the rubble when we're gone."

Early on, Bush conspired, with his cro-nies and liars,
They planned an attack and ransacked Iraq,
Leaving in their wake a war-torn land.

Now's the time to bring our soldiers home, man,
And repair the mess that we have made.
Give Iraqis back their sov'reignty, man,
And fix the damage done in our own land.

So [Ed Royce], are you list'ning? All our troops we are missing.
A wonderful sight, our troops home tonight,
walking with their fam'lies hand in hand.

6. Dreck the Halls
(Nelson-Alviso 2007)

"Fund the war or leave them stranded!"
BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA
"Fight them there or they'll attack here!"
BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA
Thus they give us phony choices
BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA
Call out these deceptive voices:
LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE!!!

"Stay or else the blood's on your hands!"
BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA
"Force this 'freedom' onto more lands!"
BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA
"Back us or you're weak on defense!"
BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA-BLA
What do we call such rank pretense?
LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE!!!

7. God Rest Ye...
(Sweetelle, 2007)

God rest ye dear insurgents, it's no wonder you're aggrieved:
We stirred up quite a hornets' nest and now we'd like to leave;
If we can have regime change HERE we'll occupy no more,
and we'll wish you the very shortest civil war,
a very short war,
yes we'll wish you the very shortest civil war!

God rest ye U. S. soldiers, we have heard that you're alarmed.
How can "accomplished missions" keep on causing so much harm?
Your sacrifice and courage taken hostage by their lies,
Oh we're singing 'cos we don't want your demise,
not your demise,
Yes we're singing 'cos we don't want your demise.

God rest ye dumbed-down citizens, the truth must be proclaimed!
Our leaders feed the media, you're programmed to be lame.
It's time to shout, stand up and yell, we'll tolerate no more
politicians and their greed-inspired wars,
their oil-based wars,
No we'll foot the bill for NO MORE STUPID WARS!!!

8. Happy Xmas, War is Over
(John Lennon, 1971)

So this is Christmas, and what have you done?
Another year over, and a new one just begun.
And so this is Christmas—I hope you have fun.
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.
A Merry Merry Christmas, and a happy new year:
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.

And so this is Christmas [WAR IS OVER IF YOU WANT IT]
For weak and for strong,
the rich and the poor ones, [WAR IS OVER NOW!]
the war is so long.
And so happy Christmas [WAR IS OVER IF YOU WANT IT]
for black & for white,
for the yellow and red ones, [WAR IS OVER NOW!]
let's stop all the fight?
A Merry Merry Christmas, and a happy new year:
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear?

WAR IS OVER, IF YOU WANT IT, WAR IS OVER NOW......(3x)

California Democratic Party to Obama: Get Out of Afghanistan.

End the U.S. Occupation & Air War in Afghanistan

Whereas, The California Democratic Party, concerned citizens and lawmakers are calling for a U.S.A exit strategy from Afghanistan that will end the occupation and air war while ensuring the safety and security of our troops, our nation, and the region; while even the U.S. Ambassador General Karl Eikenberry expresses concern about corruption in the Afghan government and our inability to stabilize the situation; and

Whereas, the plight of women in Afghanistan is such that they continue to bear an especially heavy price under and eight-year occupation, and that far from eradicating the Taliban and other insurgencies, the presence of foreign troops has instead strengthened them, creating greater insecurity, death and impoverishment of the Afghan people; and

Whereas, a majority of Americans are increasingly disturbed about the toll the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan is taking on the honorable young men and women who have been killed and wounded and on their families as our involvement there continues to cost billion each month while the United States and particularly the State of California are in an economic crisis without money to fund domestic needs;

Therefore be it Resolved, that the California Democratic Party, in addition to reiterating its support for a time-table for withdrawal of our military personnel, calls for an end to the use of mercenary contractors, as well as and end to air strikes that cause heavy civilian casualties, and urges our President to oversee a redirection of our funding and resources to include and increase in humanitarian and developmental aid, multi-party talks aimed at ensuring a democratic and legitimate representation of the people of Afghanistan, as well as multi-party regional diplomacy for the safety and stability of neighboring countries; and

Be it Further Resolved that a copy of this resolution shall be sent to the California Democratic Congressional delegation, as well as to President Obama.
