Mar 5 Tuesday 7pm, Laguna Woods:
Concerned Citizens of Laguna Woods Village: "HEIST"
@ Clubhouse 7
The film "HEIST" traces the 2008 economic collapse back to a secret 1971 memo, titled 'Attack on American Free Enterprise System.' This was written by then-business-lawyer (later Supreme Court Justice) Lewis Powell. Requested by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the memo - a free-market utopian treatise - urged big business to make over government by controlling the media, academia, clergy, and arts and sciences, and by destroying organized labor and consumer protection groups. Powell's real end-game was business control of law and politics.
Gather and Greet 6.30 pm.

Pat Goodman will bring us up to speed on the campaign to defeat the desalination scheme currently influencing your water districts (www.nowaterdeal.com) This is the campaign project championed and designed by Gus Ayer. This campaign deserves our energy and dedication because water is our most precious resource and we cannot allow it to be privatized.
DFA-OC is in transition. We need to set new goals or renew them; be more certain about where we want to go and how we are going to get there. Howard Dean urged us to get involved in our local politics; to know our school boards and city councils and run for office if changes were needed.
There is much going in Orange County. How do we find out about local developments? We have progressive blogs, facebook and clubs but little else to keep us informed or call us to action.
DFA-OC has had many great friends over the years. More than a few are still active. Bring your ideas and thoughts. We'll talk and maybe decide.

WORKERS, ORGANIZE!
Because of the 'fiscal cliff' the wages of all workers have been reduced and this has resulted in the general lowering of the standard of living.
The increase in the cost of living has resulted in further wage cuts.
WHAT MUST WE DO?
The Only Answer Is ORGANIZATION!
DO YOU KNOW?
That under Section 7-A of the N.L.R.A. workers are not only granted the right to organize, but are guaranteed the right to exercise the privilege without discrimination?
That American Postal Workers took advantage of this privilege to organize and through their negotiations gained increased wages and benefits?

Press Conference
@ 3701 McFadden (corner of McFadden and Harbor)
There will be a press conference where we will ask Orange County DA Tony Rackauckas to place charges on the police officers responsible for the shooting in Anaheim against Manuel Diaz, Joel Acevedo, Cesar Cruz, Marcel Ceja and other victims who were killed while disarmed and shot in the back. The police officers and murderers are free and have no charges placed on them. They have to be held accountable for the crimes according to the law, like any other citizen who commits a crime.
We also ask the police force to stop putting innocents in prison. We ask for justice for my son Jesus A. Aguirre, a minor of 16 years of age who was sentenced and judged, unjustly, as an adult to life in prison for a crime he did not commit.
The organizations Los Amigos de Orange, Chicanos Unidos, Los Amigos de Santa Ana, LULAC, ACLU, SEIU, LHA, OCCOR and others will be present. Please support us with your attendance. Your support is important.
Tony Rauckauckas is in power because of our vote. His responsibility is to protect, to serve and to help the community by applying the law without favoritism, if not he needs to resign. If he doesn't do his job as he's supposed to we demand his resignation.

Victory Party for José Ucelo.
@ Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim,
511 S. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim 92805
On March 9, 2012, José Ucelo was picked up for work by an employer at the Home Depot on Brookhurst in Anaheim. This employer introduced himself as "Nick," which Mr. Ucelo later learned was an alias used by Michael Tebb, a serial wage burglar. The employer brought Mr. Ucelo to the work site in Garden Grove, where he worked approximately 10 hours. After the work was done, Mr. Ucelo asked for his pay, but "Nick" became aggressive, attempting to start a physical fight and refusing to pay. Mr. Ucelo backed away and called the police to report the wage theft. Ironically, Mr. Tebb at this point also called the police, falsely accusing Mr. Ucelo of theft. Multiple police officers arrived on the scene, and detained Mr. Ucelo, but not Mr. Tebb.
Mr. Ucelo was transferred from the County Jail to federal immigration custody, in spite of having the false charges against him dropped. The complications with the immigration case have caused severe hardship for Mr. Ucelo.
He was facing deportation and possible separation from his 10-month-old son, but the proceedings have fortunately been dropped.
We must defend Mr. Ucelo and other day laborers who face wage theft and exploitation by criminal employers. Join us in our victory party in support of restitution for Mr. Ucelo and the human rights of day laborers.

World Premiere of
The First 60x60 Environmental Mix
@ Soka University of America,
Black Box Theatre,
1 University Drive
Free, open to the public
The 60x60 Project, begun 10 years ago by Robert Voisey of Vox Novus, has become one of the most engaging programs of new music around the world. Each program (or "mix") includes sixty 1-minute-long recorded compositions presented without pause, and typically includes works by leading contemporary composers and sound artists of all kinds alongside fresh works by students. As the program has begun attracting more and more entries from composers all over, more mixes are produced each year, sometimes centered around a particular theme or a group of composers (works by women composers, composers from particular nations, works using voice, etc.).
This year marks the first ever mix centered on environmental themes. Composers from over a dozen countries are represented, and pieces including everything from field recordings at unique locations to sounds from outer space, from insect and animal sounds (yes, birds and bees, and also various pets) to urban noises, to expressions of the feelings people have for the places they inhabit, to lots of water sounds, will be heard. Among the composers whose work is included are Joan LaBarbara, Joel Chadabe, Hye Kyung Lee, Judith Statin, Richard Festinger, and, from Mission Viejo, Michael Golden.

Steven Gorelick via SKYPE.
Steven is from ISEC, author of Small is Beautiful, Big is Subsidized and co-author of Bringing the Food Economy Home. He runs a small-scale organic farm with his wife and two children in Vermont.
The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. As governments and big business continue to push for "growth" in the form of increased global trade, we're seeing an increase in climate chaos, senseless war, fundamentalism, financial volatility, income inequality, and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, people around the world are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of both trade and finance. And, far from the old institutions of power, communities are coming together to re-build more human-scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm - an economics of localization.
The International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote systemic solutions to today's social and environmental crises. Their work seeks to reveal the root causes of those crises-from unemployment to climate change, from ethnic conflict to loss of biodiversity- while promoting grassroots and policy-level strategies

Lou Regal's presentation concerns the psychological differences between liberals and conservatives.
His talk will be based on several sources, but primarily The Righteous Mind by Jonathon Haidt. This book helps explain some of the conflicts and lack of compromise among our politicians and within other institutions. According to the author, the "conservatives" have a distinct advantage over the "liberals."
This will be a Power Point presentation.
Peter Anderson has suggested that people check out a "TED" talk on this issue. This can be found at the link,

Apr 14 (2nd Sunday) 1:30pm, Irvine: Americans United for Separation of Church and State - Screening of "How To Die In Oregon." In 1994, Oregon became the first state to legalize aid in dying. As a result, any individual whom two physicians diagnose as having less than six months to live can lawfully request a fatal dose of barbiturate to end his or her life. Since 1994, more than 500 Oregonians have taken their mortality into their own hands. In "How to Die in Oregon," the film maker gently enters the lives of the terminally ill as they consider whether - and when - to end their lives by lethal overdose. The film examines both sides of this complex, emotionally charged issue. What emerges is a life-affirming, staggeringly powerful portrait of what it means to die with dignity. There is no charge for the film; come early for a good seat, socializing and snacks. The address is 15500 Sand Canyon Ave, it is in the same parking lot as the Irvine Ranch Water District Offices. You would turn left when entering the parking lot off of Sand Canyon Ave. The main entrance faces the parking lot and "Community Meeting Room" is signed on the door. It is between the 5 freeway and the 405. Get off the 5 freeway at Sand Canyon and go south to Waterworks Drive and make a U-turn. Or exit the 405 freeway at Sand Canyon and go north to Waterworks Drive.

[Rescheduled] Apr 16 (3rd Tuesday) 5:30-7pm, Orange:
Peace Vigil by MFSO and CODEPINK re-scheduled
As many of you know, after our monthly vigil at the Traffic Circle in Orange, most of us meet for a little "down time and socialization" at Watson's Drug Store. The Orange County Peace Coalition has requested that we change our regularly held vigil, (the third Tuesday of the month), to a time when they have their regularly scheduled OCPC meetings. The idea would be to combine their meetings, (many of us go to OCPC meetings and the vigil). This means that instead of socializing after the vigil, OCPC meetings would be held at Watsons Drugs at 7pm. This might help us have more people at our vigil if OCPC members will just come a little earlier and would also mean that many of us could free up another day on our calendars. Due to many events that have prevented our organizations from meeting last month, we have not had an official vote of approval on this idea. Therefore, we hope that by giving this a try we can make a more informed decision on this at our next MFSO and OCPC meetings. In the meantime, we will not have our regular vigil this Tuesday, and hope that you will join us at the Traffic Circle on the 4th Tuesday of the month - April 23 starting at 5:30. At 7pm we will then join the OCPC meeting at Watsons beginning at 7pm.

Our purpose is humanitarian. Because these people are not part of the criminal justice system, their rights are few. Many detainees have no visitors and are thrilled when we come to just talk and listen. We welcome you to come and learn more. We have a special need for Spanish speaker volunteers.

Conscious Cinema proudly presents Vanishing Of The Bees
a film by George Langworthy and Maryam Henein
Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon threatens the loss of much more than honey as we depend on honeybees to pollinate one third of the food on our tables. Vanishing of the Bees chronicles the innermost thoughts and feelings of beekeepers and scientists as they fight to preserve the honeybee and make it through another day.
Featuring experts like author Michael Pollan, the film also presents a platform of solutions, encouraging audiences to be the change they want to see in the world. This award-winning documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between Humankind and Mother Earth.
Special Guest Speakers: Henry Kurland and Barbara Sinclair, President and Vice-President of Long Beach Beekepers. They will bring an observation hive and honey sticks will be available for sale to support Long Beach Beekeepers.

North OC MoveOn Council Meeting
At a Private home near Cal State Fullerton
pol.moveon.org/event/progressiveaction/138362
This meeting will prepare us to work together to accomplish some important goals. The most important political goal which we can do this year, as decided by our group at our last meeting, is to help pass the California Disclose Act, SB52, through the California legislature. Big corporate money is drowning out our voices and subverting the democratic process. If it passes, the California Disclose Act will allow us to "follow the money" and know who is paying for political ads, which would shine a cleansing light on the political process. By working together with many other Progressive groups here in Southern California and all across the state, such as MoveToAmend and Common Cause, we have a very real possibility of laying the foundation to Reclaim Democracy here in California, and more importantly for America as a whole.
We will meet at the home of Barbara Nelson in Fullerton, to watch an educational documentary about the Money in Politics issue. Then after a brief discussion lead by John Goodman, we will have a brief training for the online phone banking project of California Clean Money Campaign (CCMC) , so that we can get as many people as possible involved in pushing the CA Senate to pass the Disclose Act. The floor vote in the Senate will happen BEFORE THE END OF MAY, so we need to act right away. The meeting will end with a brief NOC-MoveOn meeting, followed by a relaxing and, no doubt, delicious potluck meal and social hour.

Peace Vigil by MFSO and CODEPINK
The Orange Circle at the intersection of
Glassell St and Chapman Ave.
The idea would be to combine the two activities, (many of us go to OCPC meetings and the vigil).
This means that instead of socializing after the vigil, the OCPC meetings would be held at Watsons Drugs at 7pm. This might help us have more people at our vigil if OCPC members will just come a little earlier. We hope that you will join us at the Traffic Circle on the 4th Tuesday of this month starting at 5:30. At 7pm we are all invited to join the OCPC meeting which will be held right after the vigil at Watson's Diner- just around the corner beginning at 7pm.
hope you will join us at our monthly MFSO/ Code Pink vigil. Please encourage everyone to come; there is a lot of traffic so it's well worth the time. Come help us get the word out that we demand an end to the war in Afghanistan NOW - 2014 is a full 2 years away and we will not stand by silently.. We have signs, but please bring your own if you have one.

ADDITIONAL NOTICES
With the recent announcement from CA Attorney General stating that secure communities is optional, we want to let OC sheriff to take the same stand as LA Sheriff Lee Baca. OCDT drafted a letter to OC Sheriff Sandra Hutchens that will be made public and delivered as soon as community organizations sign on to the letter. Our goal is to have as many organizations to sign on to the letter as possible. If your organization has any further questions, please let me know.Sheriff Sandra Hutchens:
In the last month there have been very important announcements regarding the federal Secure Communities program. The first important announcement was made by California Attorney General Kamala Harris as she made it clear that Secure Communities is optional for local law enforcement. This was followed by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and Los Angeles Police Commission stating publicly that they would no longer comply with Secure Communities. As important as these statements have been, the bigger issue is the existence of 287(g) agreements and the aforementioned program. Such collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has created an environment of fear within the immigrant community. Our community has not felt safe when dealing with police authorities, and by collaborating with ICE, the rift between community and law enforcement grows wider. With these programs, those that end up in deportation proceedings are mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons, not hardened criminals.
We demand you make a similar announcement regarding Secure Communities and that you end your 287(g) agreements with ICE. By you working with ICE, you are not making our community safer, but rather exaerbating the fear and resentment that already exists towards law enforcement. Your mission statement states that your department is "dedicated to the protection of ALL" and your vision statement reads that our "trust" is your "legacy." If you truly want the community to trust your department, the first step should be a public statement in support of the recently re-introduced Transparency and Responsibility Using State Tools Act (TRUST Act), a bill that would set guidelines regarding Secure Communities and help ensure that our community is truly secure. Nationally, the debate around immigration has been one of criminalizing communities and dehumanizing hard working people who are not criminals. Again, we demand that you not contribute to the continuous criminalization and dehumanization of our community through Secure Communities and 287(g) agreements.
Sincerely,
