Jun 4 Thursday 6pm, Santa Ana:
Rally to Save Our Bus Service
Former Bus Terminal Plaza, triangular corner
of 5th St., Santa Ana Blvd., & Ross
Please join us this Thursday for a rally to call attention
to our huge bus service cuts. Bring as many friends and
bus riders as you can so we can let people know how
important this is. We will be letting people know about
the cuts, encouraging people to attend the June 8 OCTA
board meeting vote, and advocating for more bus funding.
OCTA Bus Service Reduction Vote -
Monday, June 8, 9 am
OCTA Headquarters, 1st Floor, Rm. 154,
600 S. Main St., Orange
Please get as many people as you can to attend this
last meeting on the service cuts. The Board is not
expecting the public to show up, so it will send a great
message to them that we care about our service! Even if
you can't speak, your presence will make a huge
difference.
Let OCTA know what effect these cuts will have for
you and your best suggestions on which cuts would
hurt least. Also let them know that you'd like them to
support finding ways to make bus capital funds available
for bus operations.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
1. Attend our June 4, 6pm rally and bring some friends.
2. Attend the June 8, 9 am OCTA Board meeting vote
3. Send this e-mail to your friends.
4. Urge your legislators to restore transit funding
(see below)
CONTACT YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS
The only way to stop the cuts is to restore transit funding!
Most legislators are not familiar with the huge, disproportionate
impact they had on transit when they voted to eliminate state
transit operations funds to pass the budget. Let them know
how the cuts will affect you and ask them to restore funding.
This is the most important thing you can do!
Speaking points:
* Bus riders are taking a disproportional hit; bus service is
being reduced by almost 40% !
* Bus service is lifeline transportation for people with no
alternatives - riders will lose their jobs and health care
* We HAVE bus capital funding, but we need bus OPERATIONS
funding
* Ask them to explore ways to restore operations funding or ask
feds to make capital funding flexible on a temporary emergency
basis
If you're not sure who your State legislators are:

Friday Night Film Series - The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo
thegreatestsilence.org
Since 1998 a brutal war has been raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Over 4 million people have died. And there are the uncountable casualties:
the many tens of thousands of women and girls who have been systematically kidnapped, raped,
mutilated and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army.
The world knows nothing of these women. Their stories have never been told.
They suffer and die in silence. In The Greatest Silence, these brave women finally speak.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange present films that raise awareness and encourage conversation about the dynamic, ever-changing, systemic and critical needs of our world. Through a variety of titles and topics, attendees explore what it means to live a life in relationship with each other, our neighbors and the whole community of life. The evening includes refreshments, dialogue and possible opportunities for action.

Using the killing of Lawrence King as the backdrop, our film focuses its attention on the challenging issue of violence in our schools as it is directed at LGBT youth.
Through interviews with experts in the field and personal stories of victims, perpetrators, and family members, we will examine how systemic attitudes of prejudice and intolerance provide a fertile soil in which those who are considered "different" can become targets of violence.
The filmmakers Gary Takesian and Roz Esposito will speak, as will Robin Voss, the Producer of For the Bible Tells Me So, who is the senior advisor on this film.
There will also be time for a Q&A session.
Jun 7 (1st Sunday) 8am-5pm, Huntington Beach:
Arlington West Memorial
vfpoc.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=2029
This coming weekend, on Sunday June 7, we will attempt to have our June 2009 installation of the Arlington West Memorial in Huntington Beach.
The Occupation of Iraq continues, more troops are headed to Afghanistan. We have troops deployed between these than ever before. We need to remind the public of the continuing conflicts and sacrifices, as well as being there for service members and families in need of help.
Weather forecast:
The present forecast is for a high around 67 under partially cloudy skies. I've noticed these early forecasts tend to be gloomier than the actual weather. Regardless, we will be there and should see good crowds there as long as the weather doesn't get extreme.
___________________________________________________________________
Inspite of the many years and new administration in DC, we are as dedicated as ever to doing what we can to keep the costs of these conflicts in front of the public, to continue this display, forum and venue, and to promote the cause of peace, while honoring those that serve and particularly those that have been sacrificed. This while also fighting for full and proper benefits and care for our returning and past veterans. We cannot let the public forget that many of our nation's sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and even fathers and mothers, are still daily struggling and risking life half a world away.
Please consider helping, or at least visiting, as we again setup our memorial on the sands of Huntington Beach to give thanks to and to honor those who have served our country and particularly those that made the ultimate sacrifice. We must continue to remind the public of this ongoing conflicts and their costs to our nation and its families, and also to continue to talk to, support and help the many Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Veterans, family members and concerned others that come by.
Volunteers are needed and guests are always very much welcome.
As usual we will be at 6th Street (north of pier and of Main Street) Huntington Beach on the beach. Display should be up from 8 to about 5PM. Please come visit and, if you can, PLEASE come to help with setup and/or breakdown. In addition to the moving display and great people and the beach itself, we will have a good selection of peace supplies for small (or large) donations. We often have many great people visiting and great conversations going on.
Volunteers:
We usually need the most help and transport in the morning, though both morning and evening are critical.
We meetup at the storage unit, Mini-U-Stor, at 7611 Talbert Ave. HB (that's n/west of Beach Blvd. between Beach and Gothard) at 7AM. We can use some additional transport help and lots of helping hands. We get to the beach around/after 7:30 and start the setup of the field of crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 40 minutes or over two hours. Take down goes much quicker than setup (at least for the beach portion). We will be back to our regular schedule for breakdown, meaning we will start breakdown about 5PM. Then we load the vehicles and put everything back into storage.
Hope to see you there,
Wage Peace,
Ken Arnold

Also, and more important, we'll discuss proposals from MoveOn for our next event at the end of June. We need to consider their suggestions, and decide if any of them fit our particular local circumstances, if we can "modify" their suggestions to make them fit, or if we have anything different in mind, at our local level, that would satisfy MoveOn's goals for the event. Finally, and as important as anything else, we have to determine who is a Core member of our group, and how we can use the recruiting tools that we already have, along with materials provided by MoveOn, to expand the size and influence of our Council.

The RESULTS Partners here in OC been working hard lobbying congress to support microcredit, foreign aid reform, global health and education.
Right now we have a great opportunity to help award Muhammad Yunus, the "Godfather of Microcredit," the Congressional Gold Medal. With Foreign Aid Reform finally on the table, we want to make sure our representatives know what microfinance is and that it's a proven way to help very poor families support themselves rather than become dependent on aid.
At this meeting, you will:
* Learn what microcredit is.
* Learn a powerful short "laser talk" that will make you look like a microcredit expert when you talk to your congressperson or to the person in the cube next to you.
* Be equipped with practical tools to make an actual difference - whether you have a lot or a little time to spend.
* Learn about what RESULTS is doing in your community and what it takes to become a Partner.

Free film and discussion: Shelby Knox Redux
The Peace, Environment, and Justice Team of Mesa Verde United Methodist Church will address the sensitive issue of homosexuality in the Christian church by hosting the local premiere of a new film, Shelby Knox Redux, with a discussion to follow. This event will take place on Friday, June 12, at 7:00 p.m. at the church, which is located at 1701 Baker Drive in Costa Mesa. All interested community members, including
teens, are invited to attend. The event also includes light refreshments and free babysitting.
Shelby Knox Redux, a documentary by Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt, profiles a high school student who, despite her deeply conservative Southern Baptist upbringing, advocates comprehensive sex education and gay rights. Five years after her controversial activities and now living on her own, she returns to Lubbock, Texas, to check in with her friends, her supportive parents, and a local church that "welcomes" everyone. The film takes viewers on a journey of personal awareness, helps people of faith process their thoughts and feelings on some issues they may feel conflicted about, and sheds new light on the meaning behind the greatest commandment. A trailer for the film may be viewed at
youtube.com/watch?v=B27YJxGkDz4

We will be screening the brilliant documentary 'Why We Fight' from Eugene Jarecki's documentary series. It chronicles the birth of the Military Industrial Complex. No other than Ike Eisenhower, staunch World War II hero and two-time US President, first employed these words in his farewell speech in 1961. Filmmaker Eugene Jarecki uses the blunt warning contained in that now infamous speech to trace the history of the American war machine to the present. His approach is evenhanded and sober, and while the film might actually succeed in winning over undecided minds, "Why We Fight" offers little news for anybody who has been paying a modicum of attention.
Here is an excerpt from an article about the film from About.com:
The film's title is derived from a series of Frank-Capra-directed World War II propaganda shorts. Jarecki found that when he tried the question on contemporary Americans, the answers weren't as assured as they had been 60 years ago. Why do we fight? Why are we at war with Iraq? "Freedom" is the best answer people could muster, but as it has become increasingly obvious that the Bush Administration lied about its reasons to invade, many of those asked are at a complete loss. Jarecki suggests a simple answer: "Follow the money." According to him, Eisenhower's warning is proof that there has always been a tendency toward metastasizing militarization; the events of September 11, 2001 merely accelerated it. At a time when, as he puts it, the political elites are becoming identical with financial elites, the military-industrial complex now encompasses lobbyists, think tanks and a complicit media that is happy to be "embedded" with the troops instead of attempting to find an independent
point of view. The corrupt system that leads to perpetual war, according to Jarecki's thesis, is now so pervasive that it's becoming more or less invisible.
To engage that system, Jarecki interviews people from all parts of the machinery: a grandmother who pushes missiles around a factory floor but confesses she would rather work in a toy factory, an optionless youngster signing up for the army, a Vietnamese immigrant who escaped one war and now designs bunkerbusting bombs for another, the fighter pilots who proudly delivered the first strikes in a preemptive war, a Pentagon officer who has become entirely disenchanted with the military, and a retired cop who struggles to reconcile his grief for the son he lost on 9/11 with the realization that he has been duped by the administration's lies. Among the talking heads are Gore Vidal, William Kristol, Richard Perle amd John McCain.:

4In this MUST SEE film, Food, Inc., (Watch Trailer) filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of e coli--the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.
Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farms' Gary Hirschberg and Polyface Farms' Joe Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising -- and often shocking truths -- about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.
Lets show our government that we DO care about these issues and please go see these movies in theaters! Organize groups of friends and relatives. This will be a GREAT intro to your doubting friends.

Day of Service - Healthy Food Drive
Health Care Awareness - Prevention
A few interested neighbors gathered on June 6 to discuss their
experience with health care. We have many concerns about forthcoming health care reform. But we agreed that prevention (annual physicals, dental checkups, exercise and healthy eating) is key to drive down health care costs.
We decided to participate in President Obama's Day of Service to promote health care issues in our local communities and that a healthy food drive is a way to high-light the importance of prevention in our health care system. This is an opportunity to talk with our family and friends about health care: How is the current working for them? What is their experience with health care? HB Youth Shelter is the recipient of our donations.

Featured Speakers: 7:30 - 8:30 P.M. Sue Reams and Frank Courser, both from the group, "Families to Amend California's Three Strikes," will deliver a presentation about the history of the "Three Strikes" law in California. Passed by voters in 1994, California's "Three Strikes" law is an oppressive legal program that can result in life in prison for conviction of even minor felonies, often nonviolent-drug offenses. It's estimated that of the thousands of inmates incarcerated under California's "Three Strikes" law, approximately 45 percent are Black, 26 percent are Mexican/Central American and 25 percent are White. Reams and Courser will give us an update on the current status of the "Three Strikes" law and talk about what efforts are being made to change it by FACTS and other grass-roots organizations. Open Forum 8:30 - 9:30 P.M. Open discussion, announcements, and other news of interest. The "Potluck for Progressives" is endorsed by the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim and is free and open to the general public. Although a small donation might be requested to help pay for facility costs, nobody will be turned away due to a lack of funds.

GreeNeda Event - MOVEMENT TOWARD A FREE IRAN AT UCI
HUMAN RIGHTS AND FREEDOM ARE STILL A STRUGGLE FOR MANY IN THE WORLD
UCI Campus - Aldrich Park
GreeNedaMovement@gmail.com
"Human beings are members of a whole, in creation of one essence and soul... If one member is afflicted with pain, other members uneasy will remain... If you have no sympathy for human pain, the name of human you can not retain..."
GreeNeda is a movement of unity among world citizens who in light of the latest injustices occurring in Iran have united in support of the Iranian people. It is a movement toward a Free Iran, by the people and for the people in support of the resilient freedom seekers.
Iran's current uprising, following the recent presidential election and the ensuing concerns about fraud, is the most significant movement since the 1979 revolution.
The people of Iran, in hopes of having their voices heard through peaceful gatherings and protests have been met by gun-wielding, baton swinging militia.
Our mission is to educate the public about human rights issues and to promote a platform of solidarity with the people of Iran as they seek their own freedom during the current crisis and the atmosphere of violence and intimidation.
We will accomplish this by organizing a "Teach - In" on the issues surrounding the current climate in Iran. Expert speakers and educators will make presentations on the history of events shaping today's Iran and provide insight into the possibilities for the future.
We respectfully request your participation and presence at our event, which will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Aldrich Park on the campus of University of California, Irvine. uci.edu . Parking will be available for $7.00 at the parking kiosk. The urgency cannot be emphasized enough as we aim to strengthen the resolve of the people of Iran and to expose the world to the current struggle of the people.

Jun 27 Saturday 4:30-7pm, Irvine: Get Engaged Tour Fellow Marriage Equality Supporters - By now, we've all heard that the California Supreme Court has ruled to uphold Prop 8. With marriage equality a reality in Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and even Iowa, it's astounding to think that just a year ago same-sex couples could marry and today that right has been snatched away by a mere majority vote. While we are disappointed by this decision, we can't be discouraged and now's the time to get engaged! On Saturday, June 27th 4:30pm @ Irvine United Congregational Church (4915 Alton Pkwy) we will be hosting a community gathering to discuss what we know and what we need to do to regain marriage equality in California. A broad coalition of community organizations have come together to sponsor the latest California poll on support for marriage equality and initiative options. Results from this poll, along with information on how our county voted on Prop 8, will be shared. We will have an opportunity to not only ask questions, but to provide input on what we'd like to see in a future campaign and find out how we can get involved today. So I hope to see you on Saturday, June 27th and bring a friend, we can use all the help we can get! Though the world's surface is covered by 70% water, only 1% is suitable for human consumption.
In this award-winning documentary, Irena Salina investigates one of the most important political and environmental issues of the 21st Century: as the world's fresh water supply is dwindling, corporate interests are seeking to privatize it.
Through interviews with scientists and activists, she reveals the building crisis at both the global and human scale, and introduces many of the governmental and corporate players behind the water grab, while begging the question "CAN ANYONE REALLY OWN WATER?"
Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis.

Frey spent a year documenting the Mexican immigrants living in clandestine shacks and shanty towns within eyesight of multi-million dollar mansions. These shacks have no electricity, water or sanitation and are just yards away from some of the most expensive real estate in America. Come see this never before filmed expose of migrant life.

This battle will not be won in the courtroom or in the voting booth, it will be won in the hearts and minds of the American people. Face-to-face contact has been proven time and again to be the most effective ways of influencing opinion.
We'll be meeting in Marina Park, providing training and practice, then we'll fan out to go talk to people about the importance of marriage equality. The more people we have, the more people we can reach. Please join us!

Saturdays, 11pm-2am, Santa Ana: The Lights On Program is an amazing fully volunteer-run effort, offering warmth, caring & resources to those being released from incarceration. Conceived by the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, the program endeavors to help these men & women successfully re-enter society by meeting their immediate basic needs & connecting them to intervention & prevention programs to reduce further offenses. Volunteers man an RV, located across from the Intake & Release Center of the Santa Ana Jail. Volunteers are able to offer coffee, water, snacks, clothing, & the use of their cell phone, all provided free of charge. The RV also supplies free printed resources providing a comprehensive list of shelters, sober living homes, job programs, legal aid services & more to help them towards self-sufficiency. Oftentimes, once they are released from custody, they have no money for phone calls or bus fare. This program offers an immediate presence, a sort of safe haven for those men & women who often feel disoriented during the critical post-release period. The Seva Cafe is an experiment in the joy of giving. It is very different from most restaurants specifically because there are no prices to any of the meals, it is run completely by volunteers, and every meal is prepared with one single-minded focus: to serve with love.
At the end of the meal, every guest is also given the opportunity to participate in the circle of giving. Guests can give from their heart whatever they wish, and those donations are used to pay for future guests' meals.
