May 4 Tuesday 1-3pm, Irvine:
Funeral for Higher Education
UCI Flagpoles
After nearly a year of protests, the UC Regents and President Yudof are not only continuing to ignore students, but are beginning to propose more cuts for next year. The Regents have stated that the UC will have to make $5 BILLION in cuts over the next 5 years; cuts at this magnitude will have a permanent and devastating effect on the UC system. The Regents have made a mockery of the idea of public and student input into the cuts--supposedly public meetings are constantly rescheduled and moved to completely inaccessible times and locations. How many undergraduates can attend a meeting on a Tuesday morning at UCSF? To make matters worse, 4 UCs and 2 CSUs have begun Student Conduct proceedings against student activists. These hearings have operated outside of the bounds of due process, telling students that the burden is on them to prove their innocence.
On May 4, we are calling for accountability and transparency from our administrators and an end to extrajudicial repression of activists. May 4 also commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Kent State massacre, where student protesters were gunned down without provocation by National Guard troops.
There will be a rally, followed by a mock funeral procession, to mourn the deaths of those students and the end to public higher education. We ask that everyone dress for the funeral, but also bring noise-makers and signs.
(1st Tuesday) 7pm, Laguna Woods Village:
Concerned Citizens of Laguna Woods Village -
Dr. Blase Bonpane speaking on "Latin America: Another World Is Possible."
Dr. Bonpane was unable to speak as originally scheduled at the March meeting, but he will be with us for our May meeting.
Once described by the Los Angeles Weekly as “the most underrated humanist of the past decade”, Blase Bonpane worked for nearly 50 years as an advocate for peace in Latin America.
He is the author of numerous articles and books, including Common Sense for the 21st Century and Civilization is Possible. He has been honored with many awards, including the Distinguished Peace Leadership Award given to him in 2006 by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.
As a Green Party candidate, Dr. Bonpane ran for the House of Representatives in 1992. He is currently the Director of the Office of the Americas which is dedicated to furthering the cause of international justice and peace through education. KPFK, Los Angeles, listeners are inspired by his Sunday morning show, “World Focus”. He also hosts the show on cable TV stations.
Join us for a Gather and Greet time at 6:30 PM before all general meetings and for 30 minutes after each meeting. Coffee, teas, and snacks will be provided.

May 4 Tuesday 7pm, Irvine/Anaheim:
MoveOn Corporate Community Forum
The recent Supreme Court decision that lets corporations have the same rights as people in elections is the final straw. This is a 5 alarm fire--democracy is in peril. And it's going to require a citizen army to fight corporate influence, demand real accountability from our elected leadership, and reboot American democracy so it works for the hard-working people who make this country great.

My Story: One People, One Struggle
UC Irvine, Cross Cultural Center, Dr. White Room
Salaam (peace) everyone.
Spoken word? Yezzir.
THURSDAY May 6, which is in Week 6, is MSU's open mic night, My Story: One People, One struggle. This is the closer to the week long series of events titled Roots of Pain: Oppression, and we wanna end it BIG!
soooo we decided to bring in a certain someone named *AMIR SULAIMAN* inshAllah or God willing (insert raucous applause/cheering here), a poet and spoken word artist who performed on Def Jam, to get everyone's blood pumping.
After a week of trying to create awareness for various examples of injustice and oppression happening all over the globe, including our very own inner cities, we at MSU want to make sure people on campus get their voices heard as well.
So if you have any story about which you feel strongly, or any injustice you or your cause have been subjected to, SPEAK UP! Don't let it be lost to the silence of the past! Make sure it gets heard in the present!

May 7 (1st Friday) 6:30-9pm, Orange:
Friday Night Film Series: The Least of These
2009, 62 Minutes This film takes a penetrating look at the T. Don Hutto Residential Center, a former medium-security prison that re-opened in 2006 as a prototype family detention center. The facility houses immigrant children and their parents from all over the world who are awaiting asylum hearings or deportation proceedings. As information about troubling conditions at the facility began to leak out, activist attorneys sought to investigate and address the issues. The film explores the role (and limits) of community and legal activism in bringing about change. The film leads viewers to consider how core American rights and values - protection of children, presumption of innocence, up- holding the family structure as the basic unit of civil society, - should apply to immigrants, particularly children.

Our discussion at the end of the film will be lead by

hillsides covered with wildflowers, shady oak woodlands, and the
constant circulation of our drinking water. This fascinating urban
oasis is known as the Santiago Creek Watershed.

Currently, they are almost extinct due to a loss of habitat and interruption in the flow of the river. Trout-fin-hats/costumes are highly recommended for participants.

The Santiago Creek watershed begins in the Santa Ana Mountains, runs through Santa Ana, connects with the Santa Ana River, and connects to the Pacific Ocean. Steelhead Trout used to trek from the ocean to the mountains, providing food for Grizzly Bears up until recent times. Friday Night Film Series: Which Way Home
The film follows several unaccompanied child migrants as they journey
through Mexico en route to the U.S. on a freight train they call
“The Beast”. It features the stories of children like Olga and Freddy,
nine-year old Hondurans who are desperately trying to reach their
families in Minnesota, and Jose, a ten-year-old El Salvadoran who
has been abandoned by smugglers and ends up alone in a Mexican
detention center, and Kevin, a canny, streetwise 14-year-old Honduran,
whose mother hopes that he will reach New York City and send
money back to his family. These are stories of hope and courage,
disappointment and sorrow are the ones you never hear about — the
invisible ones.

Our discussion at the end of the film will be lead by
Munmeeth Soni an immigration attorney from the Public Law Center

There is no better time than now to insist that our nation be supplied with clean energy.
Please show your support at the Newport Beach pier this Tuesday evening to recognize those effected by the spill. Tuesday will mark the 50th day since the start of the spill and it's about time we collaborate and help make a difference!

Protest Whitman & Fiorina
Our friends at the California Labor Federation are asking you to join them at a rally to protest presumptive GOP nominees Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina.
As Republican candidates launch their general election campaigns at a "victory" breakfast in Anaheim, with their presumptive nominees Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina having spent a combined $100 million to buy their respective primaries, California workers and families will rally to declare they won't let these candidates buy the Governor and Senator offices in a hostile corporate takeover of California.
Rally and protest outside GOP "victory" breakfast to declare
that the general election isn't for sale.

Jun 9 Wednesday noon-1pm, Costa Mesa:
MoveOn "No Bailout For BP" Rally
Northeast Corner-Bristol and Sunflower, 3929 Bristol
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
The massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico just keeps getting worse. The oil slick is now as big as the state of Maryland and scientists say ocean currents could carry oil from the spill all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, devastating wildlife and wiping out entire fishing communities. If that wasn't bad enough, we know the damages from this spill will be massive, and under current law, taxpayers are stuck with most of the bill.
So, join the Irvine and More MoveOn Council at an urgent rally to call on Congress to prevent a Big Oil bailout by taxpayers. BP, not taxpayers, needs to pay every penny to clean up their mess. We'll also call on Congress to support strong campaign finance and ethics reforms -- so that Congress starts working for the 98% of us who aren't represented by DC lobbyists.

Screening of "Coal Country"
COAL COUNTRY is a dramatic look at modern coal mining. We get to know working miners along with activists who are battling coal companies in Appalachia. We hear from miners and coal company officials, who are concerned about jobs and the economy and believe they are acting responsibly in bringing power to the American people. Both sides in this conflict claim that history is on their side.
Families have lived in the region for generations, and most have ancestors who worked in the mines. Everyone shares a deep love for the land, but MTR (Mountain Top Removal mining which has leveled over 500 Appalachian mountains) is tearing them apart.
We need to understand the meaning behind promises of "cheap energy" and "clean coal."
Are they achievable? At what cost? Are there alternatives to our energy future?

MigraWatch: Laguna Beach
Broadway at the Bus Depot (@Cliff Drive going
up the hill)
Over the past few weeks, ICE has carried out a number of immigration raids in Laguna Beach, targeting bus riders. There are rumors that another raid--the largest yet--will happen Friday.
These rumors have created a panic among immigrant workers in Laguna Beach--those who live and work there. We need to send the message that the community opposes these raids, but more importantly we need people in the community that day to observe and record ICE activities in the city and begin educating community members about their rights. Even if it's a false alarm, a presence of migrawatchers that day will help alleviate fear.
This is very short notice, but a strong turnout is necessary. We can use this space to plan a course of action.

WHAT: We will be waving signs, chanting, and passing out literature. We will be trying to raise visibility and educate conference attendees and the general public.
WHO: LGBTQQ people, family and friends, straight allies, supportive clergy, and.....YOU! Come stand in solidarity with Orange County's LGBT community!
WHEN: 4 to 6 PM will be the focal time, but you are welcome to come early and stay late.
WHERE: We will be assembling at the intersection of Ridgeline Drive and University Drive in Irvine, adjacent to Concordia University campus.
GOAL OF EVENT: Our goal will be to show that 1) LGBT people need love, not therapy, and 2) Orange County is a welcome and supportive place for LGBT people.
SIGNS: Signs and leaflets will be provided. However, if you want to bring your own sign, please remember the key words for this event are LOVE, SUPPORT, and POSITIVITY. For example, "Gay is OK," "I love my lesbian daughter," "Trans teens need love, not therapy," or "OC Loves its Queers!"
GET INVOLVED: We will also be having people on-site during the week from Wednesday to Friday. If you are available during the week to hold signs or pass out information, please contact Alex Gorman at alexgorman1@gmail.com

QUESTIONS? If you have any questions about this event, please contact Alex Gorman at alexgorman1@gmail.com.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a legal, peaceful demonstration aimed at positivity. The focus of this event is not disruption or civil disobedience.
Also, we do not have a permit for amplified noise, so please leave your bullhorns at home!
In addition to the large event on Saturday, from 4 to 6 PM, we are having people on-site to 'fly the flag' throughout the week. It is important to have a continual presence, especially to be available with supportive resources to any attendees.
So far we have been very successful having people on-site, but we still have some open slots for tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday before the event. If you have any free time between now and then, please contact me and I will schedule you for a 2 or 3 hour shift.
It is easy and fun, so COME ON NOW! Send me a message and I'll get you all the info you need to help.

pol.moveon.org/event/other98summerlaunch
If we've learned anything since President Obama took office, it's that the fundamental changes we all want for America will be impossible until we end the stranglehold that big corporations and lobbyists have on our democracy. We know the solutions to the big problems. But most of these solutions aren't even on the table in Washington, because an army of corporate lobbyists stands in the way. To fight back, we need to go big. We need a massive new movement to kick corporate lobbyists out of DC, hold our elected officials accountable, and fix our democracy to make Washington work for the 98% of us who don't have corporate lobbyists.

Joan Baez
How Sweet The Sound
This documentary, narrated by Joan Baez herself, documents her life all the way from when she was a young girl up to the present.
Candid, warm, self-effacing and humorous, Ms. Baez describes the life she led as a musician and activist, dealing with "fame", social justice issues, and self-discovery. Given the world events we have been dealing with lately, this movie, positive and hopeful, is a welcome alternative to the serious events we are all dealing with.

Jul 7 Wednesday 7-9pm, Tustin:
Movie Screening: Food, Inc.
The documentary film Food, Inc. provides a critical look at the industrialized nature of our country's food supply. It explores the relationship between how our food is produced and human health, workers' rights, animal welfare, and other issues.
Award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner and investigative authors Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) present how complicated the U.S. food system has become in the last few decades. In addition to compelling footage, the film includes the voices and stories of food experts, farmers, businessmen and women, government representatives, and food advocates.
While revealing many concerns about our food system, Food, Inc. also reminds us that we each have the ability to bring change to the system through our food choices.

Reclaim Democracy: CRUDE (Amazon oil); Energy Crossroads
Irvine Water District Headquarters, 15600 Sand Canyon Rd. and at Waterworks Way.
Reclaim Democracy is renewing the struggle to bring us a new birth of freedom from domination by corporations. We are co-sponsoring the movement with MoveToAmend.org, working in alliance with many groups including CommonCause, FreeSpeechForPeople.org, and recently MoveOn.org. We must share the vision and share the work of democracy, in order to regain our democracy. We need to reach out to ordinary people all over Orange County, and all over America, to educate and activate citizens. Everyone needs to become aware of this problem and figure out together what we can do to secure our liberty once more. We need to enact laws regulating corporations, and in the long run we need an amendment of our Constitution stating Free Speech is for People.

Radical Cinema presents: Rebels With A Cause
a film by Helen Garvy
Who were the student protestors of the 1960s? Students For A Democratic Society (SDS) was the largest American student protest group of the 1960s, at one time boasting 400 college chapters across the country. Best known for protesting the war in Vietnam,
they also worked with SNCC to combat racism and poverty in the South and protested Chase Manhattan Bank's involvement in aparthied in South Africa. This film, with commentary by various SDS members such as Tom Hayden, Carl Oglesby, Alice Embree, Junius Williams, Bill Ayers, Cathy Wilkerson and Bernadine Dohrn, explores the inception and evolution of SDS from a small group of activists to a nationwide movement.
Following the film, Guest Speaker Naida Tushnet, founding member of the Columbia University chapter of SDS, will share her perspective on this astounding era.

So you've worked hard for what you have. You assume because you have accumulated a home and other assets and that you can feel comfortable. You are a law abiding citizen and have never broken any law. What you may not know is that your money is be an attractive enticement luring the government into taking charge of all you own and lock you away for the rest of your life. In Orange County, this is a very common practice. It happens in other Southern California communities as well. Our next meeting will be an exciting expose into a corrupt system that threatens everyone with property.

Healthcare for All meeting Canceled
Hello fellow single-payer advocates:
I'm sorry but I'm cancelling the HCA meeting for this month (July 28). Our next meeting will be Wednesday evening, August 25, beginning at 6:30 pm. Dr. Bill has agreed to make his single-payer presentation, Powerpoint slides and all. It will be a warmup for several of us to do our own presentations.
Also, please mark your calendars if you haven't already for the Mad As Hell Doctors presentation at Irvine United Congregational Church: Saturday evening, October 2. Would any of your organizations like to be a co-sponsor? If so, please let me know. It wouldn't really entail much work, mostly an endorsement of a single-payer healthcare system.
On July 28 I'll be in Phoenix, will be there for a few days protesting the implementation (planned) of SB1070. We'll also be present at some planned raids by Sheriff Arpayo on July 30. Anyone able to and want to go with me?
Thank you for your understanding. -Jan

Flicks for Thought: "Jesus Politics"
The 2008 election was not a religious contest, but for some, it might as well have been. This film was produced by an Israeli immigrant to America who came here to escape religious politics, only to find a growing undercurrent of religious influence on our elections. He documents the political support from religious organizations for candidates on both sides in the 2008 elections and what impact they had outside their local flocks.
Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
Note: This event will begin 30 minutes later than usual so those attending the Suffrage Day Lunch with Women For OC will be able to attend.

For Immediate Release – July 14, 2010
Orange County Groups Uniting
For Rapid Response to Prop 8 Trial Decision
Santa Ana, CA - The announcement from US District Judge Vaughn Walker on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 banning marriage for same-sex couples is expected at any time. Even though it will be handed down with little or no notice, supporters of marriage equality in Orange County will be ready with a “Fairness for ALL Families” rally, scheduled for 7 PM on the day the decision is announced. It will be held in Sasscer Park, across the street from the Federal Building and Courthouse in Downtown Santa Ana.
The case has received a lot of media coverage due to the presence of Theodore Olson and David Boies, who faced off against each other in the 2000 Bush v. Gore recount election. “The trial’s outcome may change the tone of the event, but it will not change its urgency,” said Linda May, a member of Orange County Equality Coalition and organizer of the event. “The right to marriage is an important issue for our families and people hoping to start their own families. This will be a positive event aimed at educating people about the issue and inspiring our community to continue our progress.”
“We have to keep having conversations with our neighbors and families about the importance of marriage equality,” said Daniel Shad, Orange County Regional Field Manager for Equality California. “People who voted for Prop 8 are increasingly saying they regret their vote when they find out how it has affected us and how the campaign was financed.”
Local activists are not the only ones following the case with interest. “No faith tradition should play a role in dividing a family,” said AJ Blackwood, a theology student and father of five raising his children with his partner Mark Miller. “As people of faith, we are called to ensure that mutually loving relationships between adults are valued in our communities and treated equally under the law.” Blackwood has experienced that domestic partnership laws do not provide all the legal rights of marriage. “Our children need to be provided with medical insurance coverage, survivor benefits, and other rights that children of heterosexual couples can access.”
“The courts have long played a critical role in our democracy in safeguarding minority rights, whether they be the rights of interracial couples to marry or the rights of women to fair employment opportunities,” said Chapman University School of Law Professor Katherine Darmer. “It is my hope that Judge Walker will recognize the fundamental right to marriage for all couples. It is a scary proposition indeed when a majority can 'vote away' the rights of minorities."
“Fairness for ALL Families” will feature speakers and entertainment, as well as representatives from local groups providing information on how to get involved. “We invite everyone to come to the event,” said May. “We see this as a chance to reach out to people who are still on the fence about marriage equality. This will be a chance for them to learn about why it is so important to us.”
