As Republican candidates launch their general election campaigns at a "victory" breakfast in Anaheim, with their presumptive nominees Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina having spent a combined $100 million to buy their respective primaries, California workers and families will rally to declare they won't let these candidates buy the Governor and Senator offices in a hostile corporate takeover of California.

Jun 9 Wednesday noon-1pm, Costa Mesa: MoveOn "No Bailout For BP" Rally Northeast Corner-Bristol and Sunflower, 3929 Bristol Costa Mesa, CA 92626
The massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico just keeps getting worse. The oil slick is now as big as the state of Maryland and scientists say ocean currents could carry oil from the spill all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, devastating wildlife and wiping out entire fishing communities. If that wasn't bad enough, we know the damages from this spill will be massive, and under current law, taxpayers are stuck with most of the bill.
So, join the Irvine and More MoveOn Council at an urgent rally to call on Congress to prevent a Big Oil bailout by taxpayers. BP, not taxpayers, needs to pay every penny to clean up their mess. We'll also call on Congress to support strong campaign finance and ethics reforms -- so that Congress starts working for the 98% of us who aren't represented by DC lobbyists. pol.moveon.org/event/standfordemocracy/103869

[Update] Jun 14 Monday 6:30pm, Tustin: Screening of "Coal Country" COAL COUNTRY is a dramatic look at modern coal mining. We get to know working miners along with activists who are battling coal companies in Appalachia. We hear from miners and coal company officials, who are concerned about jobs and the economy and believe they are acting responsibly in bringing power to the American people. Both sides in this conflict claim that history is on their side. Families have lived in the region for generations, and most have ancestors who worked in the mines. Everyone shares a deep love for the land, but MTR (Mountain Top Removal mining which has leveled over 500 Appalachian mountains) is tearing them apart. We need to understand the meaning behind promises of "cheap energy" and "clean coal." Are they achievable? At what cost? Are there alternatives to our energy future?

Jun 25 Friday 7am-noon, Laguna Beach: MigraWatch: Laguna Beach Broadway at the Bus Depot (@Cliff Drive going up the hill)
Over the past few weeks, ICE has carried out a number of immigration raids in Laguna Beach, targeting bus riders. There are rumors that another raid--the largest yet--will happen Friday.
These rumors have created a panic among immigrant workers in Laguna Beach--those who live and work there. We need to send the message that the community opposes these raids, but more importantly we need people in the community that day to observe and record ICE activities in the city and begin educating community members about their rights. Even if it's a false alarm, a presence of migrawatchers that day will help alleviate fear.
This is very short notice, but a strong turnout is necessary. We can use this space to plan a course of action.

Jun 27 Sunday noon Irvine/3pm Anaheim: MoveOn: "The Other 98%" Summer Launch pol.moveon.org/event/other98summerlaunch If we've learned anything since President Obama took office, it's that the fundamental changes we all want for America will be impossible until we end the stranglehold that big corporations and lobbyists have on our democracy. We know the solutions to the big problems. But most of these solutions aren't even on the table in Washington, because an army of corporate lobbyists stands in the way. To fight back, we need to go big. We need a massive new movement to kick corporate lobbyists out of DC, hold our elected officials accountable, and fix our democracy to make Washington work for the 98% of us who don't have corporate lobbyists.

Candid, warm, self-effacing and humorous, Ms. Baez describes the life she led as a musician and activist, dealing with "fame", social justice issues, and self-discovery. Given the world events we have been dealing with lately, this movie, positive and hopeful, is a welcome alternative to the serious events we are all dealing with.
This movie will be shown on the last sunday of the month due to father's day.
When: Sunday, June 27th @ 7 pm Where: The Village Grind Coffeehouse 443 E. 1st Street Long Beach, CA 90802 (by the corner of 1st Street and Linden Ave., next door to Utopia Restaurant) (562) 432-4033

Jul 7 Wednesday 7-9pm, Tustin: Movie Screening: Food, Inc. The documentary film Food, Inc. provides a critical look at the industrialized nature of our country's food supply. It explores the relationship between how our food is produced and human health, workers' rights, animal welfare, and other issues.
Award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner and investigative authors Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) present how complicated the U.S. food system has become in the last few decades. In addition to compelling footage, the film includes the voices and stories of food experts, farmers, businessmen and women, government representatives, and food advocates.
While revealing many concerns about our food system, Food, Inc. also reminds us that we each have the ability to bring change to the system through our food choices.

Jul 10 Saturday 6pm, Irvine: Reclaim Democracy: CRUDE (Amazon oil); Energy Crossroads Irvine Water District Headquarters, 15600 Sand Canyon Rd. and at Waterworks Way.
Reclaim Democracy is renewing the struggle to bring us a new birth of freedom from domination by corporations. We are co-sponsoring the movement with MoveToAmend.org, working in alliance with many groups including CommonCause, FreeSpeechForPeople.org, and recently MoveOn.org. We must share the vision and share the work of democracy, in order to regain our democracy. We need to reach out to ordinary people all over Orange County, and all over America, to educate and activate citizens. Everyone needs to become aware of this problem and figure out together what we can do to secure our liberty once more. We need to enact laws regulating corporations, and in the long run we need an amendment of our Constitution stating Free Speech is for People.

So you've worked hard for what you have. You assume because you have accumulated a home and other assets and that you can feel comfortable. [Canceled] Jul 28 Wednesday 6:30pm, Mission Viejo: Healthcare for All meeting Canceled Hello fellow single-payer advocates:

Also, please mark your calendars if you haven't already for the Mad As Hell Doctors presentation at Irvine United Congregational Church: Saturday evening, October 2. Would any of your organizations like to be a co-sponsor? If so, please let me know. It wouldn't really entail much work, mostly an endorsement of a single-payer healthcare system.
On July 28 I'll be in Phoenix, will be there for a few days protesting the implementation (planned) of SB1070. We'll also be present at some planned raids by Sheriff Arpayo on July 30. Anyone able to and want to go with me?

Aug 7 (1st Saturday) 10am-1pm, Huntington Beach: Help support Native American land rights at the corner of Bolsa Chica Street and Warner Ave. in the city of Huntington Beach, CA. We will be protesting the destruction of the cogged stone site CA-ORA 83. For more info. call 949-228-7262 or email bigrockcreek@msn.com
On Tuesday, July 6th the Huntington Beach City Council voted to change the zoning at Bolsa Chica (ORA 86) to low density zoning which means that the City will be able to use an old Environmental Impact Report dated 10 years ago. And, this will make it easier for the developer, Hearthside Homes, to build additional homes on the Sacred Site at Bolsa Chica.
The developer's Archaeologist, Anastasia Nancy Wiley, continues to state that there is not a likelihood that Ancestral remains will be found. This is outrageous since we know that the Ancestors are resting all around the Bolsa Chica area! The developer will be requesting an additional building permit from the Coastal Commission. Therefore, we need to continue to obtain letters of objection to the continued development of Bolsa Chica (see attachments). Letters can be forwarded to the Coastal Commission or to me at 6002 Acacia Ave., Whittier, CA 90601 and I will hand carry them to Theresa during a meeting with her sometime during the month of August.
Please join us in our monthly protest at Bolsa Chica on Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the corner of Bolsa Chica Rd., and Warner Ave. in Huntington Beach. We have protest signs but you can bring your own.. Susana salas.susan4@gmail.com

SEPTEMBER

[Postponed] Sep 1 Wednesday 4-5:45pm, Anaheim: Stand with Imane event postponed Support Religious Inclusivity and Diversity ocregister.com/opinion/imane-263757-disney-work.html
Dear Friends,
I wanted to let you know I received word this evening that Imane Boudlal and her lawyers have been in dialogue with Disney this afternoon. Therefore, they are postponing tomorrow's event to respect this process and to give time necessary for any developments/decisions to occur on how they will proceed in this matter.
Thank you for your interest in this situation and please pass this message along as appropriate!

Who: Community Members, Workers and People of Faith   What: Public Action of Solidarity with Imane   Where: Disneyland Park Walk-In Entrance (Harbor and Shuttle Way, Anaheim, CA)   Why: During this time of unjust negativity directed towards our Muslim brothers and sisters, Disney can demonstrate leadership in religious tolerance by showing that people of all faiths are included and respected in the Magic Kingdom.   WHAT TO BRING:   If you are Clergy : Please wear Vestments or Clerical Attire   If you are Muslim : Please Bring Spare Hijabs to give or donate to members of the community, which they will wear in solidarity with Imane during this rally!   EVERYONE: Please Bring a plain white t-shirt, which you will write a statement of support on during the beginning of the action!
The back of the bus might have gotten Rosa Parks to the same stop, but it does not mean it was right to force her to the back. While Disney puts on a "show" in their parks and hotel, they still can model inclusivity and religious tolerance by allowing cast members to reflect the diversity of the guests who visit the Magic Kingdom from around the globe. It is because of courageous people like Rosa Parks that the civil rights movement was successful. Rules just do not change on their own. Boudlal's courage calls upon Disney to be inclusive of all faith traditions and to honor America's rich religious and cultural landscape.

We will have lots of signs like the ones that were used at the Irvine rally. There was a great sign painting meeting Thursday and we made several new large signs. Please come and hold one for the passing traffic and pedestrians to see. There will also be a table for prop 19 literature (thanks Justin). We have had numerous pro-cannabis rallies at this location and the response is overwhelmingly positive. Show your support (and have some fun) by participating. Cannabis necklaces will be given out to all participants. Questions? parking/carpooling tips? Can't make it but still want to help? Email Mark@ocnorml.org (leave a phone number & I'll call you right back) There is a lot of pedestrian traffic so we should be able to do voter registration, too. *** And by the way, No cannabis consumption at the rally, it makes for bad press. If you must medicate, leave the group and your sign then return after medicating.*** See you on Monday, Mark PS. Less than 60 days to the Vote. Don't wait, support prop 19 NOW! You can make a difference.

Sep 7 Tuesday 1pm (sharp), Laguna Woods Village: ERWIN CHEMERINSKY: "The NEW SUPREME COURT and AMERICAN DEMOCRACY" UCI's new law school's founding dean returns to Concerned Citizens for his 3rd (annual?) talk, plus full Q&A again surely lively and incisive, maybe news-making, after Citizens United v. FEC and GOP filibuster of the DISCLOSE Act. Come early: His audience should top last year's highly-appreciative 400. Noted constitutional scholar, Supreme Ct. & appellate litigator, radio/TV analyst/debater, print media voice, and civic leader, Dean Chemerinsky is also very clear, witty, down-to-earth. He'll again look at key cases, issues and trends of the last Court Term and coming up; new Justices' effect; next possible Obama nomination; and also project how recent and future rulings may impact our lives, government, democracy itself, and vital public policy (healthcare, immigration, marriage, oil spill, federal regs' scope, etc.). He'll likely reply to the Right's claims that good judges are just "umpires", conservatives aren't "activists with agendas," and popular majorities should rule. Court-watchers often say the 5 Justices deciding 1/3 of its cases already did shift law and plant seeds of more big surprises. Key recent election law rulings not only let foxes guard the henhouse but gave its very title to Big Corporate Fox-"persons" (pun intended), including blocking, mid-Primary, Arizona's landmark "Clean Money" public financing - to be decided on the merits in 2010-11. Guests invited, $2. LW Village non-residents note: Gated community. To enter: Click here for event flyer at host's website. Print, fill in its entry slip (p. 2) & show at gate. More info: Jon, 949-581-2178, LawGuruLaguna@yahoo.com. Clubhouse 5, 24262 Punta Alta, Laguna Woods, CA 92637. Click here for Interactive Map "pinned" at that venue with directions from address you type in. Our turn-by-turn directions are better: Click here and print PDF. Miller, Royce, Campbell, Rohrbacher, and Sanchez to join over 100 of their members and congressional candidates and over 1/2 million citizens who have signed the pledge....why don't they? FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Orange Countians Cancel Wedding Plans

Orange County, CA --Wedding bells will not be ringing for same sex couples in Orange
County, or anywhere else in California, this Thursday. Wedding planning began as soon
as Judge Vaughn Walker ruled that the stay preventing the issuance of marriage licenses
would be lifted at 5 PM Wednesday evening. Orange County Equality Coalition had
planned for a wedding reception themed celebration at the historic Old County
Courthouse in Santa Ana for this Thursday, but those plans are on hold. “A lot of people
are really, really disappointed,” said Cas Gregory, OCEC's Chair, “including my fiancée
and me. This affects us very personally.”

“Immeasurable harm is being done every day that goes by that couples are not
allowed the protections afforded them by legal marriage,” said Natalie Garth an attorney
who formerly practiced in Arizona. She enumerated the right to make life or death
decisions for a spouse, the right to inherit, the right to be included in a medical plan, the
right to automatic receipt of life insurance proceeds, the right to sue for wrongful death,
the right to have the protection of community property, while significant, “were all less
important than the social and psychological impact of being treated as second class
citizens.”

The prevailing attitude is “don't get mad, get even” through political organizing
and action. “I am disappointed that gay and lesbian couples will not get to marry this
week, but I am hopeful that equality will come one day soon. This back and forth has
made one thing very clear; we cannot stop our work until equality has been permanently
restored,” said Daniel Shad, Orange County Regional Field Manager, Equality California.

“There are three branches of government in the U.S. and the courts are there to
protect us from those times when democracy turns into mob rule, “ said Audrey Prosser,
long time equal rights activist in Orange County and Chair of Laguna Beach Democratic
Club. “An electorate can be fooled into depriving a minority of their civil rights for only
so long. Then we educate them that they could be next. Who knows what rights could be
voted away if this stands.” She urged people to get more information and to get involved
in local and state politics.

Dave Hoen , one of the organizers of Gay Neighbors, Family and Friends of Santa
Ana, pointed out that a lot of groups have formed and a lot of people got active in the
wake of Proposition 8. He speculated that people, especially younger people, were taking
their freedoms for granted and did not realize the level of animosity that still exists
against lesbians and gays. “I have been amazed at the level of outrage and support from
straight people, especially young straight kids. They just assumed everyone would be
treated fairly, then they see this.”

“Marriage equality is inevitable,” says Alex Gorman, Chair of Orange County
Action Network. “The time is now. People have been made to wait too long. Equal
protection is equal protection, for everyone.”

These activists believe that every day that goes by without the right to marry is a
day when serious legal and financial harm could occur, to say nothing of the
psychological and emotional toll of being treated as second class citizens, as “less than”
straight members of the community.
