Jun 1 (1st Sunday) 8am-5pm, Huntington Beach: Arlington West Memorial After another difficult month for our deployed troops, we are as dedicated as ever to doing what we can to keep the costs of this conflict in front of the public, to continue this display, forum and venue, and to promote the cause of peace, while honoring those that serve and particularly those that have been sacrificed, and also fighting for full and proper benefits and care for our returning and past veterans. We cannot let the public forget in the face of the energy, food and economic crisis and the media attention on the national campaigns that our sons and daughters, husbands and wives, even fathers and mothers, are still daily struggling and risking half a world away.
Please consider helping, or at least visiting, as we again setup our memorial on the sands of Huntington Beach. We must give thanks and honor to those who have served our country and particularly those that made the ultimate sacrifice. We must continue to remind the public of this ongoing conflict and its costs to our nation and its families, and also to continue to talk to, support and help the many Marines, Soldiers, Veterans, family members and concerned others that come by.
Volunteers are needed and guests are always very much welcome.
As usual we will be at 6th Street (north of pier and of Main Street) Huntington Beach on the beach. Display should be up from 8 to 5:00. Please come visit and, if you can, PLEASE come to help with setup and/or breakdown. In addition to the moving display and great people and the beach itself, we will have a good selection of peace supplies for small (or large) donations. We often have many great people visiting and great conversations going on.
I need to know that we have enough members willing to staff it all day and enough help and transport to get it setup and taken down. If you can help, please respond to (arncomp@pacbell.net) as soon as you can confirm your plans for Sunday.
It is important that we hear from veteran members soon to know what coverage we will have for the day. Please let us know what hours you can expect to be present.
Volunteers: We usually need the most help and transport in the morning, though both morning and evening are critical. We meetup at the storage unit, Mini-U-Stor, at 7611 Talbert Ave. HB (that's n/west of Beach Blvd. between Beach and Gothard) at 7AM. We can use some additional transport help and lots of helping hands. We get to the beach around/after 7:30 and start the setup of the field of crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 40 minutes or over two hours. Take down goes much quicker than setup (at least for the beach portion). Takedown will be on our summer schedule and we will start breakdown at, or a bit after, our usual 5PM. Then we load the vehicles and put everything back into storage.
Hope to see you there, Wage Peace, Ken Arnold VFP Chapter 110, Orange County, CA vfpchapter110.org

[New article] Jun 5 Thursday 11am, Huntington Beach: ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS ANNOUNCE FINDINGS OF NEW RESEARCH
WHAT: Local Press Conference briefing with Earth Resource Foundation and the Orange County Interfaith Coalition for the Environment. In collaboration with the National press teleconference briefing for journalists with Institute for Local Self-Reliance, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), Eco-Cycle, Clean Air-Cool Planet, and other experts.
WHERE: Huntington Beach Pier Plaza, Huntington Beach, CA (located at the end of Main Street and PCH)
WHO: * Stephanie Barger, Executive Director, Earth Resource Foundation (ERF) earthresource.org, Zero Waste Business Expert. Partner of the national organizations. * Sherri Loveland, Co-Chair, Orange County Interfaith Coalition for the Environment (OCICE) ocice.org, U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement * Other Experts to be announced
BACKGROUND: Publication of timely report on United Nations World Environment Day offers tangible solutions to climate challenge, documenting that minimizing waste and increasing recycling and composting have the same climate protection impact as closing one-fifth of the nation's 417 coal-burning power plants. Coal combustion is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.
The press conference will link the Stop Trashing the Climate report findings to issues that face every community in America and the broader climate change debate. Key findings and recommendations will be presented. The national release coincides with events across the country in Tallahassee, FL, Bridgeport, CT, Boulder, CO, Providence, RI, and Massachusetts, urging elected leaders to redirect the millions of dollars now slated for incinerator and landfill investment toward economically-sound and climate-friendly strategies such as recycling and composting.
ERF and OCICE have partnered to bring viable solutions to Orange County and beyond through education, resources, and activism. Both organizations have been very successful in educating the public about ocean pollution, especially plastic and solutions that benefit our health, economy, and the environment. ERF has led the charge on educating government and businesses about the successful Zero Waste model. OCICE has worked with Mayors throughout Orange County to sign and implement the practices outlined in the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement. The next step for the County of Orange is to provide viable infrastructure of composting and recycling for businesses to increase their bottom line and decrease our impact on the environment.
On the morning of June 5, 2008, a PDF file of the report can be downloaded at stoptrashingtheclimate.org. Additional information will be made available online following the press conference. Hard copies of the 20-page executive summary will be available at the press conference.

Jun 11 Wednesday 7pm, Irvine: Irvine United Congregational Church presents a free film screening "For the Bible Tells Me So" with guest speaker Rev. Dr. Mel White
Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays & lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity. We will view the film, distribute pamphlets on "What the Bible Says and Doesn't Say About Homosexuality" (written by Mel White from Soulforce) and have a discussion on both.
The Rev. Dr. Mel White is the founder and President of Soulforce and a former ghostwriter for fellow evangelicals, including Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, Jim Bakker, and Jerry Falwell. Inspired by the nonviolence movements of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., White developed a program based on their principles to address the suffering of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. In 1997, he was awarded the ACLU's National Civil Liberties Award for his efforts to apply the "soul force" principles of Gandhi and King to the struggle for justice for sexual minorities. He is the author of over 16 books, including Stranger at the Gate: To Be Gay and Christian in America, published in 1994, and Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Christian Right, published in 2006.

Jun 14 Saturday 6:30-8:30pm, Irvine: ReclaimDemocracy.org Orange County: NO END IN SIGHT! ReclaimDemocracyOC.org We'll show one of the films nominated for the 2007 Best Documentary Feature Oscar: NO END IN SIGHT! This 107-minute documentary film, certainly one of the most decorated and best reviewed we've ever shown, was your top choice in our recent poll asking what you'd like to see in upcoming meetings. For a film preview, click here. noendinsightmovie.com
As always, the meeting will be held at the Irvine Ranch Water District building at 15600 Sand Canyon Ave. (corner Sand Canyon and Waterworks Way) in Irvine. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM and end about 8:30 PM or so.
Here is a film synopsis: The first film of its kind to chronicle the reasons behind Iraq's descent into guerilla war, warlord rule, criminality and anarchy, NO END IN SIGHT is a jaw-dropping, insider's tale of wholesale incompetence, recklessness and venality. Based on over 200 hours of footage, the film provides a candid retelling of the events following the fall of Baghdad in 2003 by high ranking officials such as former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Ambassador Barbara Bodine (in charge of Baghdad during the Spring of 2003), Lawrence Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff to Colin Powell, and General Jay Garner (in charge of the occupation of Iraq through May 2003) as well as Iraqi civilians, American soldiers, and prominent analysts. NO END IN SIGHT examines the manner in which the principal errors of U.S. policy - the use of insufficient troop levels, allowing the looting of Baghdad, the purging of professionals from the Iraqi government, and the disbanding of the Iraqi military - largely created the insurgency and chaos that engulf Iraq today. How did a group of men with little or no military experience, knowledge of the Arab world or personal experience in Iraq come to make such flagrantly debilitating decisions? NO END IN SIGHT dissects the people, issues and facts behind the Bush Administration's decisions and their consequences on the ground to provide a powerful look into how arrogance and ignorance turned a military victory into a seemingly endless and deepening nightmare of a war.
Join us as we view this film and engage in our always lively and provocative follow-up discussion. The meeting is free and refreshments are served. And come early - this will no doubt fill the room! Steve

If you can't make it tomorrow, please respond to this email anyway. We will be working on this the next two weeks and certainly need help. savebanningranch@yahoo.com

Jul 6 (1st Sunday) 8am-5pm, Huntington Beach: Arlington West Memorial The first Sunday of each month Veterans for Peace Chapter 110, sets up the Arlington West Memorial in Huntington Beach and we need your support! This monthly vigil is our local way to honor the fallen soldiers from this war by putting hundreds of crosses on the beach along with an area where the public are invited to write messages on special crosses to particular soldiers.
Please consider helping, or at least visiting, as we set up our memorial this month on the sands of Huntington Beach. Please help us give thanks and honor to those who have served our country and particularly those that made the ultimate sacrifice. We must continue to remind the public of this ongoing conflict and its costs to our nation and its families, and also continue to talk to, support and help the many Marines, soldiers, veterans, family members and concerned others that come by.
AW is at 6th Street, (north of pier and Main Street), Huntington Beach on the beach. Display should be up from 8 to 4:30.
We usually need the most help with transport and set up in the morning, though both morning and evening are critical until we have enough regulars. We could also use a visit during the day so that VFP members can take a break. Sometimes, they are alone on watch.
We meet up at the storage unit, Mini-U-Stor, at 7611 Talbert Ave. HB (that's n/west of Beach Blvd. between Beach and Gothard) at 7AM.
We can use some additional transport help and lots of helping hands. We get to the beach around/after 7:30 and start the set up of the field of crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 40 minutes or two hours. Take down goes much quicker than set up, (at least for the beach portion). To try to get everything back into storage before dark we may start breakdown at 4:30PM. Then we load the vehicles and put everything back into storage.
Hope to see you there, Wage Peace, Ken Arnold VFP Chapter 110, Orange County, CA vfpchapter110.org
