#1 Help keep San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant closed
Tuesday May 8th in Irvine

Tuesday, May 8th, at 6:00 PM
Help keep San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant closed

On April 27th, the Irvine City Council by a 5-0 vote, signed on to a
very strong letter regarding the operation of San Onofre and its safety.
The letter will go to everyone from the President on down to other
local city councils. But Council Member Agran does not plan to let
it end with merely a letter. He intends to continue to hold Edison's
feet to the fire. At Agran's request, Edison will be returning to
the council meeting to discuss their plans to get through the summer
without San Onofre. It will be interesting to see what they say in
light of information disclosed this week about trying to put Unit II
back on line June 1. Join us at to keep the pressure on.
Your attendance gives the council the political will to act our
behalf. We are asking that green is worn to the meeting. That way
the council can identify supporters in the audience.
Irvine City Hall is located at the corners of Anton and Harvard.
Look for the TALL clock tower. If you have questions, please call
Marion Pack at 949-922-3273, or email at marionpack1@gmail.com.
If you would like more information about San Onofre see

#9 Senior Patriots for Peace: “TAKING CHANCE”
Thursday May 24th, 1pm in Seal Beach

As Memorial Day approaches, you are invited to view a FREE movie
hosted by Senior Patriots for Peace…

“TAKING CHANCE”

A remarkable true story of one soldier’s death in battle, another
soldier’s journey of discovery and a nation’s reverence and
gratitude toward its war dead.

After hearing of the heroic death of a young Marine in Iraq,
veteran officer Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl (Kevin Bacon) volunteers
to escort the remains of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps back to his
home-town in Wyoming. Now on a trip across America’s heartland,
Strobl will find himself on an unexpectedly emotional sojourn
into the heart and soul of a country mourning not only Phelps,
but all of our country’s fallen service men and women.
When the Lt. Col. gives Phelps’ parents the watch, dog tags,
and wooden cross belonging to Chance, you can feel the deep
emotion they are experiencing.

This film is also a grim reminder for us of the human cost of war
–especially when we take this one incident and multiply it by
the 4,486 American fatalities in Iraq.

Thursday, May 24, 2012
Leisure World, Seal Beach
Seal Beach Blvd. at Golden Rain Rd.
1:00 p.m., Clubhouse 4

No admission charge. Running time: 78 minutes.

#11 "Soldiers of Conscience"
Friday June 1st 7-9pm in Orange

A dramatic window on the dilemma of individual U.S. soldiers in the
Iraq War - when their finger is on the trigger and another human
being is in their gun-sight. Made with cooperation from the U.S. Army
and narrated by Peter Coyote, the film profiles eight American soldiers,
including four who decide not to kill, and four who believe in their
duty to kill if necessary. The film reveals all of them wrestling with the
morality of killing in war as soldiers experience it - a split-second decision
in combat that can never be forgotten or undone. This film tells a
story about human nature and war. As this film shows, every soldier is
inescapably a "soldier of conscience."

Event is Free of Charge St. Joseph Center, Mother Louis Room, 480 South Batavia St, Orange 92868. http://www.sistersofstjosephorange.org/OUR_MINISTRIES/justice/film-series.php 6:30-7:00 P.M.: Gathering & Refreshments 7:00-9:00 P.M.: Film & Discussion RSVP: (714) 633-8121 Ext. 7716 Justice@csjorange.org ******************************************************************** #12 Arlington West Memorial (Vets for Peace) Sunday June 3rd, 7:30am-5pm in Huntington Beach We no longer have to load the crosses in the morning. Meet at the beach at 7:30AM to help unload the trailer and setup the crosses. ___________________________________________________________________ In spite of the many years and new administration in DC, we are as dedicated as ever to doing what we can to keep the costs of these conflicts in front of the public, to continue this display, forum and venue, and to promote the cause of peace, while honoring those that serve and particularly those that have been sacrificed. This while also fighting for full and proper benefits and care for our returning and past veterans. We cannot let the public forget that many of our nation's sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and even fathers and mothers, are still daily struggling and risking life half a world away. Please consider helping, or at least visiting, as we again setup our memorial on the sands of Huntington Beach to give thanks to and to honor those who have served our country and particularly those that made the ultimate sacrifice. We must continue to remind the public of this ongoing conflicts and their costs to our nation and its families, and also to continue to talk to, support and help the many Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Veterans, family members and concerned others that come by. __________________________________________________________________ Volunteers are needed and guests are always very much welcome. As usual we will be at 6th Street (north of pier and of Main Street) Huntington Beach on the beach. Display should be up from 8 to about 5PM. Please come visit and, if you can, PLEASE come to help with setup and/or breakdown. In addition to the moving display and great people and the beach itself, we will have a good selection of peace supplies for small (or large) donations. We often have many great people visiting and great conversations going on. I need to know that we have enough veteran members willing to staff it all day and enough help and transport to get it setup and taken down. If you can help, please respond to this email (jeff.mfso@earthlink.net) as soon as you can confirm your plans for Sunday. It is important that we hear from veteran members soon to know what coverage we will have for the day. Please let us know what hours you can expect to be present. Volunteers: We usually need the most help in the morning, though both morning and evening are critical. We meet up at the beach around/after 7:30 and start the setup of the field of crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 40 minutes or over two hours. Take down goes much quicker than setup (at least for the beach portion). We are back to our regular schedule for breakdown, so should start breakdown about 5PM and hopefully have everything back in the trailer by 6:00. Please let me know if you are coming this Sunday by replying to this email or call me at 562-522-4241 Thanks Jeff ******************************************************************** #13 OC Peace Coalition General meeting Saturday June 9th, 10am-noon in Irvine WHERE: The new Friends meeting house is at 2091 Business Center Dr, Suite 100, Irvine 92612 WHO: Anyone interested in educating, organizing and changing US foreign policies promoting illegal invasions and occupations, as well as stopping the militarization of the U.S. (High School Military Recruitment, the brutal treatment of undocumented workers, and the criminalization of youth, especially those of color).
